Shot at police officers
An armed violent criminal who shot a police officer in Dortmund and barricaded himself in an apartment with his children for hours surrendered on Wednesday morning (June 3). The three children are doing well under the circumstances, the police said. They are therefore looked after by the youth welfare office. The officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries. “He was pretty lucky that his protective vest served exactly its purpose, namely to protect him from this bullet,” said police spokesman Tobias Boccarius in an interview with RTL.

Special forces surrounded the building while trying to maintain contact with the armed man for hours. The all-clear was only given around 3:30 a.m. “The specially trained emergency services from the special forces, who are trained precisely for such operational situations, were on site here, were able to maintain contact with the 51-year-old for a long time and were ultimately able to persuade him to voluntarily step outside the door, where he could then be arrested without resistance.”

Special forces surrounded the building and the all-clear was only given hours later.

The investigation into the background to the crime is ongoing. “They're just now really starting. We're still assuming a threat situation here. Which criminal offenses have now been committed, especially with regard to the shooting at the police officer, which happened at the beginning of this operation, is now being examined,” explains the police spokesman.
Wife called 911
The incident began on Tuesday evening when the perpetrator's wife made an emergency call to the police and asked for help. When the emergency services arrived at a residential and commercial building in the Höchsten district, the man shot at the police officer with a live pistol. He then barricaded himself in his apartment, where his three children were also located. “The mother was able to be brought to the emergency services at 9:15 p.m. She was also looked after intensively because she was quite under the impression of what had happened,” says Tobias Boccarius.

It was unclear whether the man had his weapon with him the entire time he was in the apartment, a police spokesman said this morning. It was initially impossible to say whether the children's mother was also in the apartment in the meantime. There was never any danger to anyone involved, the police said.
