The police pulled a tractor-trailer with a slipped load out of traffic on the A5 near Bad Hersfeld. Further travel was prohibited.

Alsfeld – The Bad Hersfeld motorway police withdrew a tractor-trailer from traffic on Monday morning (June 1st). A patrol noticed the vehicle around 9 a.m. on the A5 heading north. When inspected, the tractor-trailer was noticeably tilted and the side tarpaulins were noticeably bulged. The officers guided the truck to the “Eifa” rest area and called in a specialized heavy vehicle surveillance patrol to provide support.

The inspection revealed a dangerous picture: more than 23 tons of plastic granules had shifted during the journey. The goods, which were packed in bags, wrapped in flexible film and stacked on pallets, were secured using tension straps before the journey began in Spain. However, this method of “lashing down” proved to be unsuitable.

Since the granules in the bags did not have sufficient dimensional stability, they settled during the journey. As a result, the tension belts lost their pretension and became largely ineffective. Additional loading gaps allowed the cargo to slide to the side. In some cases, only the vehicle bodies held the loading units in place. The police prohibited further travel. Transport may only continue after reloading or additional securing.

When evaluating the digital tachograph, the officials discovered further violations. Although the tractor-trailer has a maximum speed of 80 km/h, the driver reached speeds of up to 108 km/h.

Asset confiscation proceedings were initiated against the responsible transport company from Luxembourg. The fine is likely to be well into the four-digit range. The 41-year-old driver from Romania expects a three-digit fine.

In April, the Bad Hersfeld motorway police also a heavy transport with inadequately secured earthmoving machinery on the A5 stopped.
