Hessentag causes closures in Fulda. This doesn't just affect drivers: cyclists are also not allowed to use Hessentagsstrasse.
Fulda – Visitors to Hessentag can put together their own program every day from Friday, June 12th to Sunday, June 21st. From the lower Bahnhofstrasse to the environmental center, countless attractions await at numerous stands and on 13 stages. However, both local and non-resident guests have to walk the three kilometer long Hessentagsstrasse.
Wide-area detours for cyclists during Hessentag
Bicycles, e-scooters and similar vehicles are not allowed on the festival grounds during the ten days – unless they are pushed. Anyone planning a tour on the long-distance cycle paths R1, R2 or R3, which normally lead through the Fulda-Aue, must be prepared for a changed route.
As the city administration reports, the main cycle paths are routed extensively around the Hessentag grounds. This temporary relocation not only affects the actual festival area between the environmental center and the old slaughterhouse, but also extends beyond that.
In principle, the diversion begins in the south at Johannesberg; then changes in the Olympiastrasse area to the eastern bank of the Aueweiher, continues over the new bridge at the light and air bath to Johannisstrasse and then along Bardostrasse (depending on the direction of travel on the cycle paths to the left or right of the road) to the Klosterwiesenweg area. Then the route goes through the floodplain back towards the water playground and over Wiesenmühlenstrasse towards Horaser Weg. There the R3 diversion branches off towards Leipziger Straße. The diversion for R1 and R2 continues via Horaser Weg in the direction of Horas and connects to the existing routes of R1 and R2 in the Fuldaer Weg area.
One of the reasons why the paths have to be temporarily relocated is because there are a number of action areas in the Fulda Aue. These include the special show “On the trail of nature”, the youth meeting point, the blue light mile, the family land, the sky stage of the churches, the family land and the sports festival as well as the exhibitions by the Federal Police, Bundeswehr, Hessen Mobil and Autobahn GmbH.
The entire program was officially presented on Wednesday (May 13th) by the state of Hesse and the city of Fulda. Around 1200 offers should be free of charge. The city also wants to create 10,000 additional parking spaces.
