A large battery storage project is being discussed in Dipperz. The Wisselsrod location is particularly interesting for investors.
Dipperz – The expansion of the Wisselsrod substation makes the municipality of Dipperz interesting for companies that want to build and operate battery storage systems and are prepared to invest three-digit millions in this. The topic has been discussed in the local council since autumn 2024. The first interested party introduced themselves a year and a half ago.
Several others followed. Now the project developer Kajoni explained his ideas to the members of the Dipperz community council. The aim of battery storage is to cushion peaks in energy demand by purchasing and storing electricity when there is little demand. Will be sold if demand is high.

The battery storage is used to stabilize the power grid when demand is high. The storage facilities are located in small buildings that look and are the size of garages. Such systems are built near substations where various power grids converge. That's why the Wisselsrod location is interesting for potential investors.
The developer Kajoni would not build directly next to the substation, like other interested parties, but near the bypass road, i.e. between Dipperz-West and Dipperz-East. The system, which will be designed for 250 megawatts, will require an area of three to five hectares, i.e. the size of three to five football fields.
Around 100 containers in which the storage systems are housed could be built on this area, explained Leon Gerdes, Robin Trümper and Stephan Jeznika from the project developer. A certain amount of intervention in nature is necessary, but it is not as big as in Tennet. For the construction of such a facility, a land-use plan would have to be drawn up.
This gives the community a say. If the local council agrees, Kajoni would submit a request to Tennet and the development plan could then be drawn up a year later, i.e. in 2027. The three Kajoni employees explained that the earliest the system could be put into operation would be 2030.
Does 90 percent of the applicable trade tax remain in Dipperz?
The Kajoni proposal has the advantage that the Wisselsrod district, which is heavily affected by the expansion of the substation, which is only 500 meters away, would not be exposed to further pollution in the form of noise and dust. According to information, 90 percent of the applicable trade tax would remain in Dipperz.
Citizen participation is possible, for example in the form of an electricity bonus. If Kajoni is awarded the contract, citizens should be constantly informed about developments. In addition to Kajoni, there are a handful of interested parties, two of whom have already introduced themselves. They have all been sent a list of questions from the local council.
The community has formed a working group that deals with questions surrounding battery storage. According to Mayor Klaus-Dieter Vogler, the committee should decide on how to proceed before the holidays.
