Oh, what a shock! Is there something missing here?
Anyone who has sat in a window seat on an airplane may have already discovered it: There is a tiny hole at the very bottom of the window. Don't worry, the airplane window is not broken. We explain what it's good for!
Very few of us know: the hole is made by aviation experts “Breather Hole” (called “breathing hole” in German).
It has two important functions: On the one hand, the small hole prevents the windows from fogging up from the inside. Because the windows consist of a total of three layers. The breathing hole allows moisture that accumulates between the layers to escape.
This makes passengers happy because they always have a clear view of the route they are flying over – and can take their first vacation photos.
However, the second function of the hole is much more important. Because: The hole is for our safety!
During the flight, there is immense pressure on the windows from the outside, but not from the inside. The hole serves as a so-called vent valve and ensures that the pressure between the outside and the inside is equalized. This prevents the windows from shattering. Learned something new again!
