Experts take a closer look at building insuranceThese insurance policies for your house performed best in the test
If you own a house, you should have homeowners insurance just in case!
Unfortunately, such insurance has become significantly more expensive in recent years – due to increasing claims and inflation. Saving on comprehensive insurance would still be reckless given the high asset value of a property. When assessing on behalf of ntv, insurance expert Michael Franke from “Franke and Bornberg” places particular emphasis on the performance (70 percent), without ignoring the price (30 percent). Tariffs and tariff combinations from 17 insurers were examined. The amount of the bonus was calculated for a model house at six different locations. You can see the test results in the video above.
Good advice is important for every insurance company
In general, the tariffs vary greatly, so you should take enough time and get good advice. The policies can be put together individually – for example to supplement natural hazard insurance (protection in the event of flooding, heavy rain or landslides), protection for photovoltaic systems or heat pumps.
Protection is particularly important in the event of tap water damage. Such damage – whether water stains, flaking plaster, soggy floors or hidden leaks – is often time-consuming and expensive to repair. When choosing a tariff, you should therefore pay attention to services for burst pipes on inlet and outlet pipes as well as the assumption of clean-up and demolition costs or, if necessary, hotel costs.

Pay attention to individual modules when it comes to insurance
In order to receive the maximum FFF+ rating from Franke and Bornberg, the following points must also be met: The insurance cover applies to drainage pipes both on your own property and outside – without a separate cancellation policy. This also includes damage caused by deliberate damage or vandalism of up to 8,000 euros.
Weaker tariffs perform particularly poorly if there are no benefits in the event of burst pipes, damage caused by animals, vandalism or fallen trees. Protection against scorching and scorching damage or coverage of hotel costs is often inadequate. Some policies lose additional points due to gaps when changing insurers.

Photovoltaic systems and heat pumps can generally be insured in home building insurance – the exact scope of protection depends on the tariff chosen and the contract conditions. It's worth checking whether theft of heat pumps or surge damage to solar systems is covered. There are special additional modules for this protection under the heading “renewable energies”. Balcony power plants in a rental apartment, on the other hand, fall under household contents insurance and are usually already included in newer contracts. You can see what else you need to pay attention to and what options are available in the video above.
