The man became aware of the fire when a smoke alarm went off and immediately alerted the fire department. “Thanks to the courageous and immediate intervention of the surrounding fire brigades, the further spread of the fire was prevented,” says the police report. Two residents of the house suffered smoke inhalation due to the heavy smoke and were taken to nearby hospitals.
How the fire started is currently unclear and is the subject of ongoing investigations by the Fulda criminal police. The fire site was confiscated. According to initial preliminary estimates, the total damage amounts to more than 250,000 euros. The Gersfeld, Hettenhausen, Schachen, Ebersburg and Schmalnau fire departments were on duty.
