Fulda – From now on, the city police in Fulda will wear portable cameras clearly visible on their uniforms, according to a statement from the municipal press office. The body cameras can be activated in certain operational situations and, according to the city, are intended to have a de-escalating effect. The aim is to defuse conflict situations at an early stage and to effectively reduce acts of resistance and attacks on law enforcement. At the same time, the recordings enable transparent and comprehensible documentation of the operations.
City police in Fulda are now wearing body cameras
“Our employees make an important contribution to security in our city every day. With the introduction of body cameras, we are strengthening their protection and at the same time creating additional transparency for everyone involved,” Mayor and Head of Security Dag Wehner (CDU) is quoted as saying. According to Wehner, the use of the cameras helps to make the work of the city police more understandable for citizens and to further increase security in Fulda overall.
According to the magistrate, the body cameras are used in strict compliance with all data protection regulations. Recordings would only be made on an event-related basis, stored securely and deleted after the legal deadlines. The activation of the devices is tied to clear legal requirements; Uninvolved third parties and areas particularly worthy of protection would be given special consideration.

In order to ensure the correct use of the new technology, the city police are receiving comprehensive training. This includes both the technical handling of the devices as well as the legal framework and data protection requirements, as the city of Fulda reports.
Body cameras are already being used in some areas – but not yet for train crews. That's exactly what she demanded The railway and transport union most recently at a demo in Fulda.
