A week after Eric Dane's death, Grey's Anatomy paid tribute to the actor with an emotional message. At the end of the most recent episode of the series, the most unforgettable moments of his iconic character Dr. Mark “McSexy” Sloan shown.
TV farewell that gets under your skin
On February 19th, the series lost one of its most popular actors: Eric Dane (1972-2026) died at the age of just 53 as a result of the nervous disease ALS. Just a week later, the ABC hospital series “Grey's Anatomy” dedicated a farewell to him that gets under your skin. At the end of Thursday's episode on February 26th, a 60-second video montage ran with the most memorable scenes from his cult role Dr. Mark “McSexy” Sloan, as reported by People, among others.

The emotional video was accompanied by the song “Chasing Cars” in the version by Tommee Profitt and Fleurie – a cover of the Snow Patrol classic, which was first heard in the series in the season finale of the second season in 2006. According to People 2022, the same song also accompanied the montage for the 400th episode of the hit series. A conscious choice that brings the show's story full circle in a touching way.
The most iconic moments from “McSexy”
The compilation brings together scenes that have remained in the memory of series fans for years: including the legendary hotel room scene that sealed the final end of the marriage of Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Addison (Kate Walsh). The wonderfully uncomfortable elevator ride in which Mark appears carefree between Derek's former and current partner is also part of the montage. Other highlights: his first meeting with Callie (Sara Ramirez), the moments when he became a father and how he accompanied Callie to the altar.

An excerpt from Mark's haunting speech to Jackson shortly before his serial death is particularly heartwarming. In it he warns: Anyone who loves someone should say so – even if it turns their own life upside down. The montage ends with Dane's return in the 2020/21 pandemic season, when Mark Sloan appeared in the dream sequences of the comatose Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo) on the beach and urged her to keep living. “Don’t waste a single minute,” he warned in the scene.

The official Grey's Anatomy Instagram account posted the video with the words: “In loving memory of Eric Dane.” The last image of the video shows a black and white portrait of the actor.
Eric Dane initially joined “Grey's Anatomy” as a guest star in the second season and became an integral part of the ensemble from the third season onwards. For seven seasons he shaped the series as a charming plastic surgeon nicknamed “McSexy”. His character met a tragic end: Mark Sloan died from injuries sustained in a devastating plane crash.

Eric Dane died at just 53 years old. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Eric Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon after a courageous battle with ALS,” his family said in a statement. The actor only made his ALS diagnosis public in April 2025.
