The construction of the largest solar park in the Fulda district began with the groundbreaking ceremony in Eichenzell. The system on the A7 motorway will supply electricity for around 6,000 households in the future.

Eichenzell – The energy transition in the Fulda region has taken another important step: the construction of the Wettersbach solar park began with the groundbreaking ceremony in Eichenzell. Once completed, the system on the A7 between Welkers and Rothemann will be the largest photovoltaic system in the entire Fulda district.

The RhönEnergie Group and the FW Group will build around 31,000 solar modules on an area of 122,000 square meters by October 2026. The new solar park will generate electricity for around 6,000 private households in the future and thus surpasses the previous record holder – the “SonnenScheinStrom” PV park on the A66/A7 motorway triangle – by 25 percent.

The total investment volume amounts to 8.2 million euros. The investor and permanent operator is RhönSolar Rothemann GmbH & Co. KG, which belongs to RhönEnergie Erneuerbare GmbH and FW Holding GmbH. The landowners hold small shares. TEAG Solar from Erfurt was commissioned with the construction.

Martin Heun, spokesman for the management of the RhönEnergie Group, underlined the importance of the project: “With the groundbreaking for this system, we are sending a clear signal: the energy transition is taking place here in the region – and we are actively shaping it. This project is the most ambitious open-space photovoltaic project in our history to date.”

Stefan Fella, managing director of RhönEnergie Erneuerbare GmbH, described the groundbreaking as “an important step in the generation of green electricity”. There was also tailwind from the political side. District Administrator Bernd Woide (CDU) and Mayor Johannes Rothmund (CDU) emphasized the importance of renewable energies for the region's independence and future viability.

“The start of construction for the most powerful open-space photovoltaic system in the region is an important step for RhönEnergie and for the Fulda district. Renewable energies are the future, they create independence here locally in the region,” said District Administrator Woide.

Eichenzell's mayor Rothmund emphasized the importance of the investment for his community: “Eichenzell has already been an important location for the generation of renewable energy. Our goal is to use green electricity regionally, including with a data center.”

For RhönEnergie, the Wettersbach solar park is part of a comprehensive growth strategy. With an investment program of 100 million euros by 2030, the company is driving forward the expansion of renewable energies in the region and beyond – from open-field photovoltaics to wind power and sustainable heat supply.
