Migros is withdrawing from Germany. Tegut branches are sold and the brand name disappears. What consequences does this have for the concentrated food retail market? This is what the HR magazine “mex” is looking at this evening?
Fulda – The Tegut supermarket chain, once founded in Fulda, will soon no longer exist. The owner Migros is looking for buyers for the locations. A contract was recently concluded with the Rewe Group, which plans to take over up to 40 Tegut branches. However, this transaction still requires approval from the Federal Cartel Office.
Migros recently announced that it wanted to withdraw from the German market and sell Tegut. Edeka is to take over the majority of the around 300 supermarkets, around 200 in number. The sales package also includes the logistics center in Hünfeld-Michelsrombach and the approximately 40 “Teo” mini markets. Here too, the approval of the cartel office is still pending.
hr deals with sales of Tegut branches
Aldi Nord is also showing interest in some locations, as is “Aunt Enso”. Migros had already announced in March that it was negotiating with Rewe. It is unclear whether all previous Tegut stores will actually continue to operate. “Most of the branches will be sold to other food retailers,” it said in the annual financial statements of the Migros Zurich cooperative.
Some legal experts are critical of the planned takeovers. Rupprecht Podszun, antitrust lawyer at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, criticizes the growing market power of the large retail chains in Germany. On Wednesday evening (April 22nd) from 8:15 p.m., hr television will be dedicated to the topic of Tegut-Aus and the sale of the branches to other retailers.
The article in the format “mex. das marktmagazin” with moderator Claudia Schick is entitled “Monopoly of the supermarkets: Tegut at the end – how the supermarket world is now divided”. It is teased: “At the end of the year, the supermarket that was once founded in Fulda, Hesse, will be on the verge of collapse. What does that mean for the already very concentrated market?”
In addition to the article on the sale of the Tegut branches, three other topics were announced in the 45-minute “mex. das marktmagazin” from April 22nd: “Laying hens under pressure – how the egg industry works” and “Private pension provision – what support brings what”.

It also says: “The AI effect – which value is particularly surprising”. The article is announced with the following sentences: “The fact that artificial intelligence is on the rise has now arrived everywhere. Not yet in every corner in reality, but we have all heard it. And the fear that it could cost our jobs can be felt and heard in many places.
“But what do current studies say about this? The European Central Bank has now presented surprising findings: According to this, AI is currently still beneficial for more employment and is not a job killer. But: for how long?” After the show has aired, it will probably also be available online ARD media library available.
