The public knows him as the good-humored prankster.
But privately, the life of comedian Michael Mittermeier (60) was anything but fun at times. In an interview on the occasion of his 60th birthday, he spoke about how he would not have been able to come to terms with the darkest chapters of his life without therapy.
Michael Mittermeier and his wife had four stillbirths
With his stand-up program “Zapped” Michael Mittermeier achieved his breakthrough in German-speaking countries in 1996. He has been riding his wave of success for over 30 years and regularly fills halls with his comedy programs.
However, what many people don't know: There was a time when the comedian on stage would bust out one joke after another, while inside he would be completely different.

Michael Mittermeier made it public in an NDR talk show as early as 2023: “We had four stillbirths, my wife and I.” He talked about how bad it was “that you always get this crazy high and then you get the unbelievable low again”. Mittermeier already said in a past RTL interview (in the video) that comedy helped him to cope during these difficult times.

Michael Mittermeier: “Without good therapy you are lost”
The comedian had previously complained that the topic of miscarriages or stillbirths was never discussed – especially not with men who supposedly had “no connection”. But Mittermeier sees it differently: “From the first moment it was my child and our child.”
It wasn't just the job – being on stage – that helped Michael Mittermeier deal with the stillbirths: “Without good therapy, you're lost,” he explains in a Hörzu interview. At some point he realized that he couldn't get anywhere on his own. But you can't discuss everything with your wife or friends, explains the comedian.
Today Michael Mittermeier and his wife have a 17-year-old daughter. And daughter Lilly is a great inspiration for the comedian: “So much comes from conversations with her. It touches my heart how clearly young people see this world.”
