
With a common “word for the election” the Protestant and Catholic churches in Hesse are sending a signal for cohesion and calling for people to vote.
Region – In a time of great social upheaval, the churches assume their role as a moral authority. On Friday (February 27, 2026), the Protestant and Catholic churches in Hesse published an urgent appeal to all eligible voters. Under the motto “Democracy thrives on participation,” bishops and church leaders are calling for the right to vote Local election on March 15, 2026 to actively use it as a “precious asset” and to take responsibility for the local community.

The church leaders emphasize that elections are not a given but must be actively protected. In their call, they point out that a strong local democracy is the basis for tackling complex tasks – from structural change to equal opportunities in education to climate protection.
“There are no easy solutions to any of this,” the joint statement said. It is all the more important to support politicians who argue objectively and treat each other with respect.
The “Stand up for…” campaign provides orientation
Parallel to the election call, the dioceses and regional churches launched the ecumenical campaign “Stand up for…”. In doing so, they place fundamental values such as human dignity, openness and justice at the center of the political debate. Voters are explicitly called upon to carefully examine candidates' programs and statements: Do they correspond to the Christian view of humanity and do they promote peaceful coexistence?
The churches pay particular attention to the people behind them Election posters.
