Visitors will soon be flocking to Fulda for the Hessentag, and one main goal will clearly be the special show “On the trail of nature”. Whether workshops, school tours or children's rallies: there is something for everyone at this year's Hessentag in Fulda.
Fulda – Before the opening of Hessentag there is a lot going on in the Fulda floodplains: tractors stack hay bales on top of each other, construction workers carry branches around or saw wood to size. The special exhibition “On the Trail of Nature” is the ultimate visitor magnet of Hessentag – and it should be that way in Fulda too. Construction has been going on diligently since the end of April and the meadows in the floodplains are filling up. There are many small huts on the area, and the interior of the diorama tent is slowly taking shape. Piles of earth, plants and tree trunks give an idea that something big is being created here. According to Yvonne Gärtner, coordinator of the special show, the work is almost a week ahead of schedule.
Hessentag's special show “On the Trail of Nature” is taking shape
The exhibition “On the Trail of Nature” not only provides information about the environment and naturebut allows visitors to actively participate in these topics. Whether workshops, school tours with scouts, special educational offers or children's rallies: there will be something for everyone at this year's Hessentag in Fulda, emphasizes Gärtner.
The almost 80 exhibitors offer a wide variety of events: In addition to information sessions on specific topics, the Hessian Beekeepers Association holds lectures on bees, wasps and hornets. But it doesn't stop there: In various workshops, guests can paint herb pots, build nesting boxes or cook cheese with the Hessian dairy queen. To simply switch off and give yourself a break, try forest bathing, yoga or meditation.
The animal show will also attract many visitors: not only small animals, but also chickens, sheep and bees will find their home in a large meadow near the Rosengarten car park. Guests can even see galloways and three aquariums full of different fish there.
“Highlights are definitely the straw bouncy castle run by the Hessian Farmers' Association and Antonius' duck race. So many people are already looking forward to it,” says Gärtner. In addition, the traditional milking competition with the Hessian dairy queen will again attract many visitors to the meadows. The guests of honor, including Mayor Dag Wehner (CDU), sit on a stool and have to milk a dummy cow. The winner receives the “Golden Milking Stool” at the stand of the Hesse State Milk Association.
“Another highlight will be the diorama tent with the Hessenwirt,” notes the coordinator. In the 40 meter wide and 60 meter long tent, which is located next to the German Fire Brigade Museum and the Rosenau pedestrian bridge, guests can immerse themselves in the region's nature. Between trees, earth and logs, visitors learn more about the Red Moor, the Wasserkuppe and the sea of basalt blocks at Schafstein. The exhibition in the tent primarily deals with the topic of “soil”. That is the focus of the show this year. For example, the question is what kind of soil conditions exist in the region.
Visitors can also relax and eat something in the Hessenwirt restaurant in the diorama tent or on the outdoor terrace in front of it with a view of the Fulda. Nelles takes care of the catering. The gastronomy in the tent was always known as the “Green Restaurant” in past Hessentage, but from this year it is called “Hessenwirt”.
Some exhibitors
The big exhibitors will be HessenForst, the biosphere reserve and the Hessian Farmers' Association. There are also many different exhibitors. These include the tourist association “Die Rhöner”, Rhön GmbH, the Rhön-Vogelsberg soft fruit community, the regional association of Hessian beekeepers and Hölzers Eis from Sinntal.
The fact that the floodplains were chosen as the location for the special exhibition is by no means a coincidence: they are full of living creatures and protected areas. Although they provide the perfect environment for the special show, great care is also taken to ensure that these areas remain truly protected. That's why the planning of “On the Trail of Nature” took place in close consultation with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority and the Water Authority.
“Here people have the opportunity to really follow nature,” emphasizes Gärtner. Especially on hot days, the special show offers a place to retreat to escape from all the hustle and bustle and still be on the Hesse day to be. “The guests should experience a few wonderful hours in nature and take away a lot of interesting information about the environment, agriculture and, for example, their garden,” says the coordinator. The exhibition is organized by the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Viticulture, Forestry, Hunting and Homeland. Partners are the city of Fulda, Hessen Forst and the Fulda Forestry Office.
