Two shark attacks in two days!
A 19-year-old is attacked by a shark in Brazil and loses her leg – just a day after an 11-year-old boy suffered a similar fate.
Shark bites off 19-year-old's leg! Off-duty doctor saves girl's life
Marcela Vitoria de Lima Santos (19) was attacked by a tiger shark last Monday (June 1) on the beach of Boa Viagem, in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. She is seriously injured, reports the New York Post.
The young woman's cousin is said to have realized that she was drifting further and further and was “losing strength,” as she reported to a local television station. So she got into the water and pulled her back to shore with other beachgoers. “She was very badly injured, she had already lost her leg“, she described.

Once Marcela was on the beach, an off-duty doctor rushed over to apply a tourniquet – a medical device used to stop blood flow – to her. “In patients with such severe bleeding that there is an imminent threat to their life, we need to stop the bleedingand in the case of limbs, especially amputated limbs like hers, the tourniquet saves lives,” explained Petrus de Andrade Lima, the hospital director of Hospital da Restauração, according to the New York Post.

This quick reaction was crucial: She saved Marcela's life – even if her leg had to be amputated at the thigh. However, Marcela is not yet out of danger: “There is a second concern that all these patients face after an animal bite, namely the risk of infection,” explains the director of the hospital – where an eleven-year-old boy with the same fate was admitted just the day before!

Two shark attacks in two days – just ten minutes apart!
The cruel fate of 19-year-old Marcela is not an isolated case. Just 24 hours earlier, Joao Lucas Castor Nemezio Sales (11) suffered a similar fate: He also lost his leg in a shark attack – presumably by a bull shark. He also suffered serious injuries to his hand and hip.
But that's not all: The beach of Piedade, where the minor was attacked, is only ten minutes away from the beach where Marcela fought for her life!
According to the New York Post, the brutal attack on the young woman was the fourth shark encounter this year in the state of Pernambuco – meaning the number has doubled in just two days.
