An operation saves Mira the pug's life.
Grandma the pug has been tormenting herself for far too long. She has a lump on her stomach the size of a ball. But her family is overwhelmed and can't pay for the operation, so they take Mira to the Franziskus animal shelter in Hamburg.

Mira has lived with her family for six years

Mira hasn't had an easy life so far: when she was just four years old, the dog was sold on the Internet and went to her new family. But six years later she is so overwhelmed that she can no longer look after the sick Mira. The dog finally gets help at the animal shelter.

After her family gave up the pug, Mira was placed in a foster family. Animal shelter manager Sabine Löwenstrom and her team are doing everything they can to ensure she gets the long-overdue operation as quickly as possible.

“We were all shaking”

Löwenstrom to RTL: “When she peed, it looked like she was sitting on a medicine ball.” The bulge that Mira carries on her stomach weighs around half a kilo. And this has been going on for years, as the animal shelter manager suspects. An inguinal hernia leads to a prolapsed uterus in the dog. “The uterus fell into the hernia,” said Löwenstrom.

The bulge and uterus will be removed at a veterinary clinic on Monday (June 1st). The fear that the ten-year-old pug grandma won't survive the operation is huge among the entire team. “We were all shaking and were happy when she was out of the operating room,” says Sabine Löwenstrom in an interview with RTL. “She's doing well considering the circumstances. Now we'll have to wait and see for the next few days. I think she's feeling a lot lighter now.” And further: “She drinks and eats well, is still a little shaky, but brave.”

An older couple for the dog grandma

Mira is not the first sick animal to be given away. “I can’t remember a time before when we received as many animals in such bad condition as we do now”says the manager. She cites inflation and increased veterinary costs as reasons. “People can’t afford it.” So in Mira's case, the animal shelter also covers the surgical costs of more than 2,000 euros.

The only thing Mira is missing now is her new and hopefully last family: “We want a quiet home for her. It could be an older couple. A ground floor home with a small garden and short walks would be nice.” According to the animal shelter manager, it will take around two weeks before Mira can be adopted. Anyone interested can contact the animal shelter.
