552 road users checked in just one week: With this result, the East Hesse police are ending their focus campaign to protect weaker road users – and drawing a clear conclusion.

Fulda – From Monday, May 18th to Sunday, May 24th, officials particularly focused on pedestrians, cyclists and users of small electric vehicles such as e-scooters. This group of road users is particularly at risk due to a lack of mechanical protection, according to a statement from the East Hesse police headquarters.

Control operation: Police want to protect weaker road users

The background to the campaign lies in the accident numbers for 2025, which underline the particular risk of these groups in East Hesse. According to the police, 122 accidents involving pedestrians occurred in East Hesse, in which 95 people were injured. One person died as a result of their injuries.

Officials recorded 197 accidents involving cyclists, with one person dead, 40 seriously injured and 125 slightly injured. According to police, Pedelecs were involved in 143 accidents in which 135 people were injured. The statistics show 92 accidents and 73 injuries for small electric vehicles. As part of the inspection week, the focus was on areas such as schools, daycare centers and kindergartens. According to the police, the aim was to inform weaker road users about existing dangers and to make all road users aware of considerate and rule-compliant behavior. Cyclists were given instructions on how to ride safely, wear conspicuous clothing and wear a bicycle helmet.

Police in East Hesse checked 522 road users in one week

A total of 552 road users were checked during the checks. The officers found violations in around 122 cases among drivers – including due to not wearing seat belts, improper child safety locks or using cell phones while driving. According to the police, 123 cyclists and their bicycles were also checked to ensure that they were in good condition. Defects were noticed in 25 bikes, such as a lack of lighting. 131 e-scooter drivers were also checked; Here the police recorded 38 violations.

According to the police, the increased controls met with a positive response overall from parents, teachers, educators and other road users. The East Hesse Police Headquarters has announced that it will continue to increase the safety of vulnerable road users in road traffic with targeted measures and controls.
