The Rhönhäuschen, the historic excursion destination between Ehrenberg and Bischofsheim, has new tenants and offers regional cuisine. It will reopen with a big celebration on May 1st.
Ehrenberg/Bischofsheim, – Just four months after its closure, the Rhönhäuschen, a stylish abode for Rhön lovers between Ehrenberg and Bischofsheim, will reopen on Friday (May 1st). With an opening party. The buyer from Fulda is happy that she quickly found a young restaurateur couple who met her expectations.
And Leonard Vörding, a native of Poppenhausen, wants to delight people with his wife Katharina – both gourmets and wine lovers – with Rhön cuisine and Franconian wines. “We couldn't have tolerated the Rhönhäuschen becoming a fast food joint,” is how the Fulda buyer of the historic restaurant in the Rhön explains her move.
Excursion destination in the Rhön opens on May 1st with new tenants
She has found new tenants who promise sophisticated gastronomy with “honest regional” cuisine. The opening of the completely renovated property, to which a new hiking trail leads from the Schwedenwall car park to the beer garden of the Rhönhäuschen, will be ceremoniously opened on May 1st with live music from 11.30 a.m. with an open end.
Over 80 seats inside the house and 60 seats in the beer garden await guests in the sun when the weather forecast arrives. The buyer from Fulda does not want to give her name, but the tenants Leonard (33) and Katharina Vörding (29) have already made a name for themselves as chefs and sommeliers in Würzburg in the “Stachel” and in Eibelstadt in the “Weinforum”.

Leonard comes from Poppenhausen, Katharina from Kempten in Allgäu. Both are determined to continue the gastronomy with 20 rooms – 17 of them with antique furnishings and modern comfort – at a high level after the Rhönhäuschen was closed for several months and its existence as a historic inn was uncertain.
The kitchen has been modernized and newly furnished. The new tenants have also partially redesigned the outskirts and refurbished the guest rooms without changing the historical furnishings. They would be happy to hear from anyone interested in helping in the kitchen and in the restaurant business.
New tenants have experience with gourmet cuisine and good wine
For Rhön connoisseurs, the house has been one of the most attractive gastronomic addresses since Fritz Thein bought the property from the Free State of Bavaria in 1956, expanded it and furnished it with antiques as an inn. The inn is located in the Rhön biosphere reserve and nature reserve on the B278 between Ehrenberg and Bischofsheim, to which it belongs.
Also known as the “last Bavarian beer station” before the Hessian Rhön, the Rhönhäuschen has always been a stop for hikers and Rhön lovers who appreciated the isolation and proximity of many hiking destinations, especially the Red Moor. This was once the border station between the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Kingdom of Prussia.

The customs house from 1838 is still preserved and was set up as comfortable overnight accommodation. Leonard Vörding wants to offer guests both simple and sophisticated gourmet cuisine. As before, the focus will be on trout in all its variations, but game meat dishes, venison bratwurst and Rhön wild boar ham are also on the menu.
For Katharina, who runs her own wine shop in the hotel, Franconian wines are “a matter of the heart”. She herself loves a dry Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. But beer drinkers also get their money's worth. Three breweries, including Kreuzberg beer, are represented on the menu.
At the opening there is initially a reduced menu so that guests' requests can be met quickly. In the future, the restaurant will be open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Days of rest are Tuesday and Wednesday, reservations can be made by calling (09772) 3 22 or by email kontakt@rhoen-haeuschen.de.
Three weddings and a near-death: After 57 years, Claudia Henriette and Hansgeorg Weis from Bischofsheim found themselves again in the Rhön in 2023. A fake email was a stroke of luck. As young lovers, Claudia Henriette and Hansgeorg Weis were on a school trip to the Rhönhäuschen in the late 1960s.
