Temperature chaos in April: Spring during the day, frost at night in Hesse. Meteorologists advise caution in the next few days – and also protective measures for plants.
Fulda – “April, April, he does what he wants” is a well-known German saying that means the changeable, unstable Weather describes. The transition from winter to spring often brings sun, rain, hail, snow and storms in a single day. Temperature fluctuations of almost 25 degrees are currently predicted in the Fulda region.

The sun already has a lot of power, but cold air masses also regularly ensure cool temperatures in April. “During the day the air mass warms up significantly, at night it cools down noticeably,” is how qualified meteorologist Jacqueline Kernn from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach explains the weather in the coming days.
April weather in Hesse: Extreme temperature fluctuations expected
Already in the In the past few days there had been milder weather in Hesse during the day and there was still a risk of frost at night. That's how it's going this weekend and at the beginning of next week Hesse continues, sometimes with large temperature fluctuations of over 20 degrees between day and night.
After the temperature rose to 17 to 23 degrees on Saturday, according to the forecasts, there may be light frost near the ground in some areas on Sunday night. A similar picture on Sunday: clear and rain-free during the day with maximum temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees, locally down to -1 degrees in valley areas on Monday night.
On Monday and Tuesday too, mostly clear weather is expected in Hesse, with maximum temperatures between 16 and 22 degrees. For the nights, especially in the Hessian mountains, the motto is again: Be careful, it will be cold, with occasional frost near the ground. The roads can become dangerously slippery for road users at night and in the morning.
“If you're going to be outside for a longer period of time, you should think about suitable sun protection,” says meteorologist Jacqueline Kernn, summarizing the April weather in the coming days. “For the nights, we recommend taking a closer look at the predicted temperature near the ground. You may need to protect sensitive plants from the cold.”
When the dry weather persists, hobby gardeners inevitably need to use a watering can. And that's how it happens: The influence of high pressure isn't letting go of Germany at the moment. Although weak low foothills can cause denser clouds at times, there will hardly be any rain in the next few days, according to the German Weather Service.
