Rotavirus cases in Germany are increasing – why small children in particular are at risk

It starts with a harmless chill and often ends in the hospital.
A highly contagious virus is currently spreading again – doctors and experts are observing a significant increase in rotavirus cases in Germany. The disease can be particularly dangerous for babies and small children.

The number of rotavirus infections has recently increased noticeably in Germany. In 2025 alone, over 35,000 cases were reported – significantly more than the previous year with around 19,900 cases. At the beginning of 2026, health authorities also reported high numbers in many places, with a regional focus in the north and west.

Although the wave is currently leveling off somewhat, experts continue to warn about the virus – the number of infections remains at an elevated level. According to the Robert Koch Institute, infants and children between the ages of six months and two years are most likely to become ill.

Rotaviruses cause severe gastrointestinal infections with severe diarrhea, vomiting and fever. This quickly becomes dangerous, especially for small children: the massive loss of fluids can overwhelm the body. In severe cases there is a risk of complications. It is not uncommon for affected children to have to be treated in hospital. The Robert Koch Institute counts rotaviruses as one of the most common causes of severe diarrheal illnesses in children in Germany.

In addition, the virus spreads extremely easily. Experts warn that almost every child becomes infected in the first few years of life. In addition, there is no direct treatment for the virus, only the symptoms can be alleviated. That's why experts focus primarily on prevention: early vaccination in infancy is considered the most effective protection.
