The 26-year-old has already written her farewell letter!
TikToker Monica Deyanira Cabrera Barajas almost died after unnoticed inhaling her nose ring. The ring landed in her lung – just half a millimeter from her aorta, the body's main artery. She wore the ring there for several months.

Monica was getting worse and worse

The influencer from Mexico didn't initially notice that the ring was missing because she has a lot of nose rings at home. But she soon began to feel unwell and developed a chronic cough. When Monica went to the doctor, the shock followed: a radiologist discovered the metal object in her body – only about half a millimeter from her aorta. Monica's guess: She breathed in the piercing while sleeping.

The metal object was only about half a millimeter away from the aorta, the body's main artery.

Due to the complicated situation, the operation was a delicate matter. “It ended up taking an hour and 20 minutes and they still couldn’t remove it because it was fused to my body,” she says. At a follow-up appointment a few days later, the medical team was able to remove the object. “The truth is that without surgery I probably would have died of a collapsed lung,” says Monica.

Before the operation, she even wrote a farewell letter: “I'm not going to lie, the night before the operation I wrote a suicide note because I was so afraid of dying.”

Monica would like to use her story to call for more mindfulness with jewelry. “This story is neither intended to incite fear of piercings nor to demonize them, but rather to urge caution and raise awareness that something like this can happen.”
