Seven new police assistants were sworn in in East Hesse. Their deployment is intended to strengthen security in the region. The first police assistant starts in Flieden.

Fulda – Seven new volunteer police assistants were ceremoniously commissioned at the East Hesse police headquarters on Saturday (March 21st). “The voluntary police service has become established in many cities and municipalities in recent years and is also considered an important supplement to regular police work in northern and eastern Hesse,” reported police spokeswoman Kira Rehberg.

The aim is particularly to increase the presence in public spaces and strengthen the population's sense of security. Five of the volunteers will be deployed in East Hesse in the future. Two other helpers, who also completed their training at the East Hesse police headquarters, will provide support in the North Hesse area in the future, the police in Fulda said.

The Municipality of Flieden, which introduced the voluntary police service in 2024 now has its first police assistants. Furthermore, the voluntary police service is being strengthened as part of the inter-municipal cooperation between the communities of Künzell, Neuhof, Petersberg, Eichenzell and the city of Fulda.

At the commissioning ceremony, East Hesse's police chief Michael Tegethoff emphasized the great importance of voluntary work for the population's sense of security. The North Hesse Police Vice President Klaus Wittich also recognized the volunteers' efforts with his appreciative greeting.

The mayor of the municipality of Eichenzell, Johannes Rothmund, gave a welcoming speech on behalf of the municipalities involved and linked the current political situation with the pleasing willingness to do something good. “In times of increasing dissatisfaction, polarization and loss of trust in politics and government, it is certainly no longer a given that we should be committed to our state and represent it in public,” he said.

“This makes their voluntary commitment all the more gratifying, which we are happy to encourage as much as we can.” Police Commissioner Kira Rehberg from the Prevention Department of the East Hesse Police Headquarters presented the areas of operation, areas of responsibility and distribution of the voluntary police service in North and East Hesse.

The celebratory event concluded with the contribution of volunteer police assistant Valentin Schäfer, who gave an impressive speech about commitment and volunteerism in keeping with the guiding principle of the volunteer police service “Show presence – observe – report”.

The highlight was the handover of the badges and gifts by Police Chief Michael Tegethoff and Police Vice President Klaus Wittich to the volunteer police helpers. After successful training and official commissioning, the newly acquired helpers can now begin working in the communities.
