Just in time for spring, there are new animal arrivals in the Wirgarten in Fulda-Neuenberg: the young dwarf goat Luca is still feeling his way into the herd. Eight new chickens have also moved in.

Fulda – The new dwarf goat Luca in the Wirgarten in Fulda-Neuenberg is still a little reserved. He doesn't like being petted yet, explains animal educator Jana Dumschat. However, animal training to get him used to people has already begun. In addition to the young billy goat, eight new chickens recently moved into the Wirgarten.

The dwarf goat is six months old and moved from the LindenGut farm to Wirgarten around three weeks ago. At the moment he occasionally hides between a fence gate and the outside wall of the goat shelter. Only Luca manages to squeeze into the small space – the other goats leave him alone. “This is his safe space, his retreat,” says managing director Marion Gottschalk.

Strong ranking behavior is common in goats. “And Luca is still too young to stand up to the others.” The lead goat, Lulu, gradually accepts the little goat. The remaining three young goats, Linda, Iris and Silvia, are still a bit skeptical. It is important to offer the animals enough space so that they can stay out of each other's way, especially when getting to know each other, emphasizes Gottschalk.

In the future, the Wirgarten team hopes that Luca will look after goat offspring in the future. “But we don’t breed specifically,” says the managing director. While Luca is still gaining confidence, other residents of the Wirgarten are already in top form: the peacocks Franz-Josef and Raffaelo present their feathers during the courtship season.

In addition to the young billy goat, eight new chickens recently moved into the Wirgarten: four of the Brahma breed and four Houdans, which are crested chickens. The animals are around twelve weeks old – but the Brahmas in particular are real “mini dinosaurs,” says animal educator Jana Dumschat. When fully grown, they would weigh around four kilograms. The new chickens are currently still in quarantine, but they will soon have access to the large free-range area with the remaining chickens.

With the new animal arrivals and the approaching spring, the Wirgarten is noticeably in motion. The coming weeks will show how well Luca integrates into the herd and whether there will perhaps be the first offspring of goats in Neuenberg in the future.

But Luca and the chickens weren't the only new arrivals recently: In September 2025, three Amazon parrots also found a new home in Wirgarten Fulda.
