
Six candidates are applying in Hanau to succeed Claus Kaminsky (SPD). But there are many signs pointing to a race between two favorites – the counting is underway.
Hanau – A total of six parties had candidates for the election as mayor Hanau has been an independent city for a few months sent. The favorites to succeed him are Mayor Maximilian Bieri (SPD) and city councilor Isabelle Hemsley (CDU). The other applicants come from the Greens (Sascha Feldes), the FDP (Henrik Statz), the Left (Jochen Dohn) and the Justice Party (Khurrem Akhtar).
Mayoral election in Hanau: votes are being counted
After counting almost half of the 112 electoral districts, the SPD candidate and incumbent mayor Maximilian Bieri is in the lead with 47.64 percent, followed by Isabelle Hemsley with 36.65 percent. If this result remained, the two would go into a runoff election on March 29th. The other parties' candidates have so far each received between three and four percent of the vote.
Maximilian Bieri and the CDU city councilor Isabelle Hemsley had were already considered favorites to succeed Claus Kaminsky. The incumbent had announced in the summer that he wanted to relinquish his position early on September 30, 2026.
Maximilian Bieri is 35 years old, has a doctorate in mathematics and emphasized cooperation in his campaign. According to hr information, he describes himself as a “bridge builder between generations, topics and people”. Isabelle Hemsley, born in Hanau in 1989, is the city's head of public order and also sits on the executive board of the Hesse CDU.
