Jannik Bachus (29), Felix Rehberg (32) and Yannik Voß (27) from Hersfeld meet their long-standing club – Hünfelder SV. Before the derby, the trio talks about old times and the distribution of roles in the duel.
Hünfeld – bottom against leaders: In the handball league, Hünfelder SV welcomes TV Hersfeld on Saturday (6.30 p.m.). It is a very special game for the Hersfeld trio.
We are in “Pös”, the Hünfeld handball players’ home. For you it was almost a second living room. What goes through your mind when you think about returning tomorrow?
Yannik Voß: Excitement, absolute anticipation. Especially since we still have something to make up for after the defeat against Wesertal.
Felix Rehberg: For me, the anticipation of meeting the boys from the last few years, who I have coached myself, and then celebrating with them right here and there after the game – hopefully.
Handball league: Explosive derby for Hersfeld trio
Hünfeld recently separated from coach Stephan Kimpel. Fabian Sauer and Christian Krätzig, two old companions of yours, are taking over. What does that mean for the game? What do you expect from an HSV team?
Jannik Bachus: I think they will be motivated again because the run-up to the season hasn't been that good so far. And I don't think they'll play any worse now.
Felix Rehberg: In sport you often have the phenomenon that teams become more dangerous after a coach change. And after the first leg, in which Hünfeld stood up to us for over 45 minutes, we were definitely warned. I don't know whether this will have a playful impact so quickly. But I believe that Hünfeld will be extra motivated.
Hünfeld is tumbling towards relegation and is last with just one point. As a former Hünfelder, how much does it hurt to look at the table?
Jannik Bachus: Of course it hurts, you spent a few years here. But from my side it was already foreseeable – and it turned out to be true.
Yannik Voß: I'm extremely conflicted. On the one hand, they are by far my best friends who play on the team. Of course I feel sorry for them to see them losing every game over and over again and fighting for points but not winning. On the other hand, it is the right step to dare to make a new start and to integrate your own youth and get them to be able to look towards the top league again.
The situation at your club is completely different. Hersfeld is first, but recently made a mistake against Wesertal and is now only two points ahead of HSG Baunatal. Is the big tremor coming now?
Jannik Bachus: Because we won the direct comparison against Baunatal, we are actually three points ahead. We could lose again, but we shouldn't. But I'm not afraid of any opponent because we are individually superior to the teams in the league in all positions. We just have to get it together.
After Hünfeld there will be a duel with the third team Großenlüder/Hainzell. Is this the key game for promotion?
Felix Rehberg: Yes, definitely. If we make a mistake in Großenlüder, then the head starts, then the so-called trembling starts and that shouldn't happen to us.
Hersfeld handball trio about discipline and big goals
Hersfeld has a good mix of young and experienced players. Plus the Reinhardt brothers Fynn and Lasse, who are probably the best handball players in the region. If you don't get promoted with this squad, it would be a huge failure.
Felix Rehberg: Yes, you could probably say that.
Would you go to the regional league?
Yannik Voß: We have all made the commitment for the coming season.
Jannik, does the regional league also appeal to you because you have everything you need for higher-class handball – except perhaps the necessary discipline?
Jannik Bachus: I think, in terms of talent, I could have done this much earlier. I definitely got in my own way, but that was partly due to injuries. At the two stations where it didn't work out before, I was still very young. But I would have to do a year like that again – also to prove it to myself.
Can you imagine returning to HSV in any way?
Felix Rehberg: I was already a trainer and youth coach at HSV and can definitely do that again in the future when my own playing is over.
Yannik Voß: If the framework structure, time and family planning allow it, then definitely.
Jannik Bachus: Never say never. I would have Before the season I didn't think I would go to Hersfeld. So, I'm not ruling anything out.
