Dog tears four-year-old to the ground – “Her face was full of blood”
Luna-Ann visits an acquaintance in Nuneaton, England, with her mother Amy Hobson and her little brother on August 6, 2023. The American Bulldog Junior is actually locked in a room. But suddenly he opens the door and pounces on the child. The dog bites the four-year-old's cheek, knocks her to the ground and drags her across the hallway.

In court, Judge Matthew Walsh described the horror: “Junior launched an unprovoked, sudden, frightening and brutal attack on Luna-Ann. He changed the life of a four-year-old girl,” he said, according to the Manchester Evening News. Her mother desperately tries to kick the dog away. When he finally lets go, the little one is hardly recognizable. “Luna-Ann's face was covered in blood with a huge gash on her cheek. Her mother said she could see into her mouth,” the judge continued.

Two operations and still nightmares
The four-year-old is immediately taken to the hospital. Doctors have to operate on her face twice. Another operation is still to come. Today Luna-Ann is seven years old and is still suffering from the attack. Her mother, Amy Hobson, read a heartbreaking statement in court: “This brutal dog attack traumatized my daughter. She no longer sleeps at night and struggles with nightmares in which she screams: 'Get him off me!'” she is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.

Several operations have to be done to save Luna's disfigured face. The deep scars and trauma will probably stay with the girl for the rest of her life.

Luna-Ann used to be a self-confident girl. Today “it is just a shadow of what it once was.” Her daughter is also afraid of everyday school life because she fears being bullied because of her scars.
No detention for the owner
Despite the lifelong consequences for the girl, dog owner Emma Callaghan gets away with a light sentence. The court sentenced her to a three-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months. In addition, she must complete 250 hours of community service and take part in 25 rehabilitation days.

The court will not decide until next week whether the dog will be euthanized and whether the owner will be allowed to keep dogs in the future. For Luna-Ann, the damage has long been a reality. Her mother says: Things took a sickening, life-changing turn. That was the moment that changed Luna’s life forever.” (nha)
