Mackenzell, a district of Hünfeld, should now be better protected from flooding: a wet meadow with a retention function was created on the Molzbach.
Mackenzell – A wet meadow site with a retention function has been created on a meadow east of Hünfeld-Mackenzell on the Molzbach. This is intended to protect the local area from flooding, as the Konrad-Zuse city reports.
“The floodplain was revitalized there,” reports Mayor Benjamin Tschesnok (CDU), who was on site to see that the work had been completed. In the event of heavy rain, the water from the Molzbach should now initially flow onto the meadow and thus relieve the local situation in the event of a flood.
Flood protection in Mackenzell: floodplain project with a major impact
In recent months, the floodplain at Molzbach has been extensively revitalized. To do this, excavators removed earth from the meadow next to the Molzbach, widened the watercourse and reconnected the floodplain to the water. “This is intended to promote natural development of the body of water with its adjacent floodplain,” explains Tschesnok.
In order to create more space for flooding, the banks were flattened with the help of an excavator and the bed was widened in some areas. Flood troughs and so-called sky ponds have been created on the meadow itself. According to the city, this will significantly increase the retention space.
“During floods, the water can flow onto the meadow and is held back there,” says Stefan Albinger, responsible employee at the city administration. The excavation resulted in an increase in volume in the floodplain.

Another component of the project was the exposure of a stream coming from Drachenstein: the previous pipe was removed and disposed of over a length of around 70 meters, and the stream was restored as a so-called initial basin. “This is how a meadow stream should develop,” explains Tschesnok.
The project was initially estimated to cost around 85,000 euros. These are credited to the city of Hünfeld’s eco-account in the form of ecopoints.
