A new image flyer on the Unesco Rhön Biosphere Reserve invites you to (re)discover the region. It shows the diversity of the Rhön from nature to sustainability.
Hilders – A new image leaflet presents the Rhön as a model region for sustainable development. “These compact insights impressively show why the Rhön is of international importance as a model region for sustainable development,” writes the Unesco Rhön Biosphere Reserve based in Hilders.
The new flyer aims to inspire both locals and visitors to explore the region. It shows the diversity of the Rhön in just a few pages: from wide views and wild natural areas to regional specialties to sustainable concepts, from the iconic basalt peaks to the sparkling starry sky.
Rhön image flyer shows diversity worth protecting at a glance
The UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve covers 243,449 hectares, making it almost as big as Saarland. Over 200,000 people live in this special cultural landscape, which is maintained by many committed people. There are 2,783 confirmed animal species in the Rhön source areas alone, including the rare Rhön spring snail.
More than 5,000 Rhön sheep are indispensable as animal landscape stewards. The flyer explains how the reserve functions as a unique space with development, maintenance and core zones. These zones show how sustainable living and working is possible, while species-rich meadows and forests are preserved through careful use and nature is left to its own devices in the core zones.

The Rhön is also presented as a learning and adventure region. Nature trails, information centers and educational opportunities for all ages, including the Junior Ranger program, illustrate how vibrant education for sustainable development is here. The flyer also highlights the impressive biodiversity, from red kites to wild cats to the small residents of the Rhön springs.
As an internationally recognized star park, the Rhön offers a night sky that has become rare in many places. The leaflet explains how star park tours, special celestial locations and sustainable lighting help protect the night. Everyone can play a role in preventing light pollution.

“With the new flyer we would like to show how much the Rhön can contain in a single moment – distant views, biodiversity, regional products, sustainable ideas, groundbreaking model projects and our valuable night sky. The flyer brings this diversity to the point and invites you to get to know the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve in its many facets,” says Dr. Doris Pokorny, lead administrative office manager.
Explore the Rhön Biosphere Reserve via app
With the app “Rhön Biosphere Reserve” you can easily explore the transnational UNESCO biosphere reserve digitally. A 3D map offers tour and excursion tips, and a routing tool records hiking and cycling routes. The app provides valuable information about Rhön nature, behavioral tips and a “virtual panorama” for an all-round view – also available in offline mode. The free app is available for iPhones and Android devices in the app stores.
The new image flyer was coordinated by the cross-border press office and is now available digitally www.biosphaerenreservat-rhoen.de as well as in a print version and can be used in a variety of ways by municipalities, tourism partners, educational institutions and anyone interested.
The flyer is available at all information points and information centers in the Unesco Rhön Biosphere Reserve/Rhön Nature Park as well as the tourist information centers and can be requested from the administrative offices.
