There are still around 100 days until Hessentag in Fulda. The anticipation is increasing. A special schnapps was also distilled for the big celebration: “A sip of local apple” from the Schlitzer distillery, a liquid ambassador of the region, so to speak.
Fulda – The first impression: pleasantly mild, dominant apple and notes of pear. This is what the “Sip of Home Apple” tastes like, which Tobias Wiedelbach, managing director of the Schlitzer Distillery, presented at the distillery on Monday (March 2nd), as a river ambassador for the Hesse day (June 12th to 21st) Fulda.
Schlitzer Distillery distills special schnapps for Hesse Day
Also there: Vera Dudyka, the female half of the Hessentag couple, Mayor Heiko Siemon, Hessentag representative Dominik Höhl and the managing director of the Parzeller media group, Haldun Tuncay. The latter reported how one Spirits tasting the idea came about to distill a schnapps on the occasion of Hesse Day that also represents the region in terms of taste.
Master distiller Nina Gottwald, who developed the spirit with her colleague Florian Susemichel, explained how the “Sip of Home Apple” is created. Only apples and pears from the region are used for the distillate. The schnapps is then matched with regional apple juice.

“The sip of home apple” has less sugar than a liqueur, said Gottwald – and should therefore not be called a liqueur. Managing director Tobias Wiedelbach pointed out that the schnapps, with an alcohol content of 28 percent by volume, is the ideal choice for anyone who loves traditional fruit brandy but prefers a milder alternative to the classic apple schnapps. “I think the overall package is impressive,” said Wiedelbach.
The city of Schlitz is also happy about the product. Mayor Heiko Siemon (CDU) explained that in addition to the “Schlitzer Fräulein” and other spirits, another product from the castle town with appeal beyond the region was now on the market. The birth of the local apple is a special moment for the city. We are proud to be able to support Fulda in this way for Hessentag.
Where “Sip Home Apple” is available
“A sip of Heimatapfel” will be available from Tuesday (March 3rd) in the Parzeller media group’s Heimatliebe shops, and from the second half of March also in selected spirits stores.
This also pleased the Hessentag representative Dominik Höhl, who stated: “This will be the most regional Hessentag that has ever existed.” He has rarely seen so many regional products at a state festival. And he spoke of the “Fulda infection” that had affected the entire region – “the solidarity is really great.”
