What a bundle of joy!
A mother from New York State is completely surprised after the birth of her baby. To our great astonishment, the “little” infant is significantly larger than expected – to such an extent that it even sets a record.
“We didn’t expect that”
Shawn Jr. is almost twice the size of an average newborn: The boy weighs a whopping 13 pounds after his birth, as the New York Post reports. That's the equivalent of almost exactly 5.9 kilograms. This makes Shawn Jr. the heaviest baby ever born at Cayuga Medical Center!

The amazed parents Terrica and Shawn have been happy about their offspring since January 30th, on that day Shawn Jr. was born in the hospital in Ithaca. But they didn't expect how great their happiness would be. “We knew he would be bigger, but we weren’t expecting this,” the mother of four said in a statement obtained by the New York Post. “He's already wearing diapers and 3-6 month clothes. It feels like I've gone straight to a 3-month-old.”

A heartwarming photo from the hospital
The hospital is also celebrating the arrival of the giant baby! She posts a heartwarming photo on Facebook – it shows: Shawn Jr. and Margot, who was also born on January 30th but weighed only 1.8 kilograms. Next to the massive Shawn, the girl looks tiny and fragile.
Cayuga Medical Center wrote about the photo: “Their shared birthday was a beautiful reminder that babies really do come in all shapes and sizes.”
Heaviest baby in the world weighed ten kilos
Even though Shawn Jr. is already really heavy, there have been even heavier babies throughout history throughout history. According to Guinness World Records, Anna Bates, herself 2.41 meters tall, gave birth to a boy on January 19, 1879 at her home in Seville, Ohio (USA), who weighed 9.98 kilograms and was 71 centimeters tall. The child died eleven hours later, but has since been considered the longest and heaviest baby ever recorded.
There are also other unusual cases – chief among them a boy who was reportedly born in Aversa, Italy, in September 1955, weighing 10.2 kilograms. But this case is insufficiently documented, as Guinness World Records points out.
