“I couldn’t do it more than three times.”
The wrong medication for her caused serious side effects for actress Mayim Bialik (50). “A nightmare,” as she says.

Mayim Bialik was actually “naturally lanky and athletic”

“The Big Bang Theory” star Mayim Bialik has described her experience with a GLP-1 drug – which also includes Ozempic and Wegovy – as a “nightmare”. “I grew up in the spotlight, with my appearance scrutinized on a weekly basis since I starred in my own NBC series at age 14,” the actress, who rose to fame as a teenager on the series “Blossom,” writes in a piece for The Free Press.

“Back then, I was fortunately unaware of my weight,” she explains, describing her younger self as “naturally lanky and athletic” and able to “eat anything I wanted without worrying about gaining weight.”

Several illnesses and an early menopause caused the actress to gain weight

As a teenager, she was prescribed “medication to regulate my mood swings”. Weight gain followed her from then on. In her forties, when she was “still actively working as an actress,” she developed a “deep sense of shame about my body.” “When social media came along—with its focus on being slimmer, more toned, and surgically perfected—that pressure led to a dysfunctional relationship with food that I've been trying to untangle for years,” she continues. In addition, premature menopause occurred. In the past few years she has gained almost ten kilos.

But she started taking the weight-loss medication “because a doctor told me it could help relieve the symptoms that I had struggled with for virtually my entire adult life.” Bialik reveals that when she was 23 years old Graves' disease was diagnosed – a chronic autoimmune disease of the thyroid. She was later diagnosed with other illnesses that affect the immune system. Bialik reports that three different doctors ultimately recommended that she take a GLP-1 drug. But this was obviously the wrong advice for her.

“Cramps, bloating, pain all over my body, like I have the flu”

She continues in the essay: “GLP-1 supplements have helped people in great need. I am convinced of that. But no one talks much about what happens when something goes wrong.” After “one shot with the lowest dose” Bialik describes some of the worst side effects as “explosive, uncontrollable diarrhea” and “severe sulfur burpsthat I was afraid to open my mouth in public”.

There were also “sneezing fits every time I tried to eat or drink” as well as “cramps, bloating, pain all over my body, as if I had the flu”. She added: “And the inability to hold down even small sips of water without running to the bathroom with more severe diarrhea. I couldn't do it more than three times.”

Take weight loss injections “only for specific, clearly defined, serious medical reasons”.

She finally decided to stop taking the medication and go to a gastroenterologist. The doctor explained to her that GLP-1 drugs “put an extreme strain on the body and should only be used for certain, well-defined serious medical reasons” – and that it “did not meet these criteria”. “When I left his office, I felt vindicated – a real doctor had confirmed to me that I wasn't a weirdo, that the medication had actually done this to me,” she describes her relief.
