DSDS winner in an RTL interviewMarie Wegener unpacks! “I was on the verge of bankruptcy”
Did you recognize HER?
She became known as a radiant DSDS winner with blonde hair – now Marie Wegener is back completely changed in an exclusive RTL interview. The singer won the 15th season of “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” in 2018 and was considered the sweet Schlager girl next door at the time. Today Marie appears completely new: dark hair, self-confident appearance – and shockingly honest words about the dark side of her success. You can see how she has changed in the video.
Marie Wegener is celebrating her big comeback
“Well, at first I was blonde. That's how people know me. Then I was red-haired for a while. And now I'm almost black-haired,” she says with a laugh about her change in the RTL interview. But there is much more to it than just a new look. Because Marie has had difficult years behind her.
“I went through very, very many depths”

Marie Wegener likes it in Düsseldorf on the Rhine. RTL met the singer there for an interview.

After a long break, the singer is now working on a new album – and in it she is processing her most difficult time. Her last release “War with Myself” was particularly extremely personal. Now follows “Do you know?” with colleague Vincent Lee. “This reflects exactly what has happened to me in the last few years. I have gone through very, very many depths in the last few years. I have experienced very, very much,” she explains openly in the RTL interview.

Above all, her experiences in the industry have shaped her. “Unfortunately, I worked with a lot of people who were not good for me on my career path. I had to put up with a lot,” says Marie. Nevertheless, she learned from everything: “It also made me stronger.” And that's exactly why her complete change came about: “I'm no longer the little mouse next door with the blonde hair in a cute way.” Marie becomes particularly emotional when she talks about her financial problems. Looking back, she admits: “I was still very childlike and very naive back then.”
That was exactly what was her downfall back then. “I blindly trusted everyone and that was also my mistake and I made a lot of bad decisions. I was on the verge of bankruptcy in my early 20s,” says the singer self-critically today. Especially in the music business, she made the wrong decisions and relied on the wrong people.

Particularly bitter: Marie openly says that she invested a lot of money wrongly back then. “I put too much money into a music video,” she tells RTL. Today she sees many things differently. “You shouldn’t blindly trust everyone,” she says looking back. She was especially disappointed by people who were close to her: “If you trust people who are close to you, then you just end up in some shit.”
The situation put the singer under extreme strain at the time. “I was on the verge of saying: I’m quitting.” There were also psychological problems. “I was almost in a depression,” she admits openly. She has her family to thank for the fact that she continued despite this. “My closest circle was my family, my mom. They helped me out.”

Today Marie, who is now studying music management, looks at the business much more critically: “The industry is very money-hungry and some people are really just after the money.” A lot has also changed physically for Marie. The singer now trains regularly in the gym – and for a very personal reason.
“A lot of people always said, 'Oh, you're so skinny,'” she says. She used to be more of a runner, but at some point she consciously decided to build muscles and become stronger. “I really wanted to build up, go to the gym, get fit.” Today she also wants to motivate others: “Hey, you can also be small and build up. This is also the new beginning of my new era.” This includes “the change in type and everything that goes with it”. And Marie Wegener makes one thing very clear: “Marie Wegener is definitely back.”
