Birthday trip ends in death!
In Chile, a 42-year-old hiker had a fatal accident while climbing the Llaima volcano in Chile. Ingrid Daniela Vera Figueroa and a group wanted to reach the summit of the active volcano on her birthday when she slipped for reasons that are still unclear. She fell around 600 meters into the depths.
The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon (May 17) at around 3 p.m. at an altitude of around 2,000 meters in the Conguillío National Park. The group was on its way to the 3,125 meter high summit of the Llaima volcano. For reasons that are still unclear, the woman slipped and fell down the mountainside. Despite immediate help, the 42-year-old died at the scene of the accident.
Hours before the tour, the married mother of two published an emotional video on social networks. In it she appeared full of anticipation, but also tense: “I hope God is with me on this wonderful day,” said Ingrid Daniela Vera Figueroa.
Ingrid Daniela Vera Figueroa lived in Villarrica, a city in southern Chile, and was involved as a parent representative at a local school. Friends and family described her as a nature-loving and adventurous woman with a great passion for hiking. They say goodbye to their colleague on Instagram.
Retrieving the body was difficult. Strong winds, poor visibility and temperatures below freezing initially prevented a rescue operation by helicopter. It was only on Monday morning (May 18th) that special forces from the Chilean police, fire department and mountain rescue were able to recover the body. Climbing the Llaima volcano is considered challenging and requires good fitness and mountaineering experience. (lmi)
