Pentecost commemorates the mission of the Holy Spirit on the 50th day after Easter and is one of the most important festivals in the Catholic church year. The Acts of the Apostles describes how the disciples of Jesus “were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues” through the miracle of Pentecost.
Until the 4th century, Christians also celebrated the Ascension of Christ at Pentecost, which is also mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. After Ascension Day developed into an independent festival, Pentecost became the festival of the Holy Spirit. The Easter festival season ends with Pentecost.
The term Pentecost comes from “pentekosté,” the Greek word for “fiftieth.” In all Catholic services on Pentecost, collections will be made for “Renovabis”, as the Diocese of Fulda announced. Renovabis is the solidarity campaign of German Catholics for the people of Central and Eastern Europe.
