Steinau is going digital. Broadband Main-Kinzig GmbH is starting the fiber optic expansion in the core city and several districts. 84 percent have ordered.
Steinau – Broadband Main-Kinzig GmbH has started the fiber optic expansion in Steinau. The first excavators will soon be rolling in the core city and in the districts of Marborn, Marjoß and Seidenroth. The construction work is expected to be completely completed by the end of 2026.
“With the start of construction, we are ushering in a new era in Steinau and the districts that will make comprehensive digitalization in all areas possible,” explained district councilor Jannik Marquart (CDU), who is also chairman of the supervisory board of Broadband Main-Kinzig GmbH. A gigabit connection enhances every property and makes private homes and companies future-proof. This will primarily strengthen rural areas as a place to live and work.
Fiber optic expansion in Steinau an der Straße has begun
Seidenroth has the best order rate so far at almost 86 percent. In Marborn and Marjoß the values are 84 percent each, while the core city still has room for improvement at 79 percent. In total, orders were placed for 1,048 of the 1,248 expandable buildings throughout Steinau – that's 84 percent. “I'm very happy with that. Maybe we'll still be able to reach 90 percent,” said Broadband Managing Director Simone Roth. Already More than 200 people came to the information event about the expansion in December 2025.
Steinau's mayor Christian Zimmermann (independent) was grateful for the district's commitment: “Unfortunately, full-scale fiber optic expansion is not possible for us because we already have some cable network areas. But we are very happy that Broadband Main-Kinzig is active wherever it is allowed to do so according to the funding guidelines. We thank the district for its great commitment.”
Not all districts can benefit from the expansion. In Bellings and Ulmbach, Broadband Main-Kinzig GmbH's hands are tied, as both places are already served by a cable network with speeds of up to one gigabit. In such cases, the funding guidelines prohibit additional expansion. The only exception is the new development area in Ulmbach, where fiber optic connections are possible with a cost share. Main-Kinzig district is investing 70 million euros in fast internet
The two civil engineering companies Klenk & Sohn and Furkan Bau are responsible for the expansion. After completion of the first construction phase, the districts of Hintersteinau, Neustall, Rabenstein, Rebsdorf, Sarrod and Uerzell will follow.
District Administrator Thorsten Stolz (SPD) emphasized: “It was exactly the right decision for the Main-Kinzig district to continue to take on the fiber optic expansion itself and not rely on leaving this to the market.” Around 70 million euros of the total 280 million euros would be invested in the gigabit expansion in Bergwinkel.
If you would like to order a free connection, you have until May 8th (city center and Marborn) or May 10th (Marjoß and Seidenroth) to do so, depending on the district. The order is placed via broadband-mkk.de/gee. An internet contract does not have to be concluded. Anyone who wants to surf with fiber optics can currently choose between Vodafone and M-net. Other providers are to follow. All information about fiber optic expansion in Steinau is also available on the city's homepage steinau.eu to find.
