The planned sale of Tegut is not just about supermarket shelves. Many markets also house post offices, bakeries and ATMs. What happens to these offers?

Fulda – It has been known for six weeks now that Migros wants to separate from the Tegut supermarket chain. While The Federal Cartel Office is examining whether more than 200 branches can be sold to Edekaand also Rewe is interested in around 40 locations has signaled, many customers are focusing on the consequences on site.

Because numerous branches are much more than just supermarkets. They combine shopping opportunities with post offices, bakeries and ATMs. The topic is particularly present in the Fulda district: of a total of 20 Tegut stores, half also have Deutsche Post parcel shops. It is still unclear whether these locations will be continued under new owners, relocated or even closed completely.

Uncertain future for bakeries, post offices and Co. in Tegut branches

Deutsche Post is currently keeping a low profile on this matter, but has generally signaled its willingness to talk. It is said that we are in close contact with the respective partners. The aim is always to maintain postal contact points as much as possible. If this is not possible, alternative solutions will be sought nearby – for example in other stores or in food retailers.

How quickly changes can occur shows a current example from desert Saxony. The Tegut market there finally closed on April 21st. The post office has already moved: in the future, services will be offered at the Esso gas station. The development is also important for regional bakeries. Many operate branches directly in Tegut stores – and benefit from walk-in customers there.

The Neuhofer Bakery Happ has four locations in Tegut markets – in Maberzell, Haimbach, in Fuldaer Rabanusstrasse and in Bad Salzschlirf. Since there is no concrete information yet from either Migros or potential buyers, managing director Michael Happ says: “We are looking at this calmly for now and are exercising patience.” How the situation develops depends on what happens on site at the individual locations. However, he is confident that existing rental agreements will be continued in the branches that have been taken over.

Will existing rental agreements be continued by new owners?

The Pappert bakery is also following the development with concern. Thomas Bertz, company spokesman and member of the management team, also expresses caution in view of the uncertainties and explains: “The Pappert bakery has noted the news of the end of Tegut and the sale of the markets with great regret.” A good business relationship has been maintained for years. The announcement of the Tegut-Aus was not a good day for Fulda and the regional economy. Pappert operates a branch on the large Tegut area in the Kaiserwiesen.

And it's not just bakers and post offices that are affected. In Marbach there is also a self-service branch of Raiffeisenbank Biebergrund-Petersberg in the Tegut market. There too, it will be interesting to see what happens next. In Wüstensachsen, for example, where there was also an ATM in Tegut, there will no longer be one in the future. An alternative location has not yet been found.

The future of Tegut affects much more than just grocery shopping. For many places, the markets are small local supply centers – with bread, stamps, cash and meetings. Accordingly, people are now looking closely at what will become of their locations.
