Because there is apparently too much theft at the self-checkout registers, a Netto store in Berlin is now pulling the ripcord. Only selected customers are allowed to pay there.
Too much is stolen from self-service checkouts: Netto-Marken-Discount is taking action
Empty self-service checkouts, full queues at the normal checkouts. This is exactly the picture that has been visible for days in a Netto branch on Schönhauser Allee in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. The reason is unusual: only registered customers are allowed to use the self-checkout lanes there.

“Exclusively for our regular customers” – that’s what it says on the display. The photo was leaked to RTL.
In plain language: Simply scanning goods and paying directly no longer works for everyone in the affected branch. A display in the checkout area states that the self-service checkouts may be used “exclusively” for regular customers with a registered Netto plus or Payback account.
According to a seller, the measure is intended to help curb shoplifting. The problem is known in the industry, especially at self-service checkouts, because products are sometimes not scanned and packaged directly.

Netto-Marken-Discount confirms the test
Netto Marken-Discount confirmed a test run to RTL.de upon request. Head of press Christina Stylianou says: “We are currently testing adapted use of the self-checkout cash registers in a few regionally selected branches. We cannot provide further details for competitive reasons.”

Many people are now ignoring self-service checkouts
The new hurdle doesn't seem to be going down well in the branch. While long queues form at the conventional checkouts, the five self-service checkouts often remain unused, according to the BZ.
The number of potential users is actually large. Payback has around 35 million registered customers in Germany. Name, email address and address are stored for the account. A good half also use the app on their cell phone. Nevertheless, the obligation to register at the net checkout appears to be more of a deterrent than practical for many people.
