Online lending is booming in Germany. Libraries in seven communities in the Fulda district are now joining. It starts with the library for your pocket, which can be used free of charge, there on March 9th.
Fulda – From Monday (March 9th), Onleihe Hessen will offer users of libraries in the member communities of the Regional Forum Fulda Südwest the opportunity to discover the entire world of literature with one click. From this date, you will receive access to a wide range of e-books, audio books, daily newspapers, magazines, e-learning content and much more through a free extension of your library membership.
The Fulda Südwest Regional Forum reported that Onleihe is already being used intensively in many regions of Germany. The OnleiheVerbundHessen, which was founded in October 2010 with just 16 libraries, now has over 125 libraries, making it one of the largest Onleihe associations in Germany.
Free online rental starts in seven communities in the Fulda district
According to the Regional Forum, the system impresses with its user-friendliness, constant availability and up-to-dateness. In the future, twelve municipal and church public libraries in the communities of Bad Salzschlirf, Eichenzell, Flieden, Großenlüder, Hosenfeld, Kalbach and Neuhof will also use the new offer.
The participating libraries include the libraries in Bad Salzschlirf, Eichenzell-Büchenberg, Eichenzell, Eichenzell-Kerzell, Eichenzell-Lütter, Flieden, Großenlüder, Großenlüder-Bimbach, Kalbach-Heubach, Kalbach-Mittelkalbach, Kalbach-Niederkalbach and Neuhof.
Onleihe works similarly to a local library: users can borrow e-books and other electronic media and read them on one or more digital devices within a set period of time. Once the loan period has expired, access expires automatically and the media is available to other users.
The borrowing system can be used on all common devices such as smartphones, e-readers and tablets and works both via the browser and via its own app, which can easily be downloaded from the App Store. It is accessible anytime and anywhere, be it from home or on the go.

Even people who have not previously used any of the libraries in the Fulda Südwest Regional Forum can take advantage of the offer. Every resident of the seven member communities can have a library card issued at a library of their choice and activate it for online borrowing.
You can then use it for two years and can easily be extended. Anyone interested can find further information about online loans online at www.bibkat.de/rffs and from the participating libraries. Meanwhile The library on Goerdelerstrasse in Fulda will close in spring 2026 after 37 years.
