After ten months of renovation, an indoor swimming pool in Ronneburg in the Main-Kinzig district will soon reopen. According to the architect construction management from Fulda, the bathroom will have a modern character without losing its historical identity.

Ronneburg – The indoor swimming pool in the Ronneburg youth center is about to reopen after a comprehensive renovation and modernization phase of around ten months. This facility, which will be used by house guests as well as schools, clubs and the public, is scheduled to be accessible again at the beginning of April 2026.

“The extensive work on the pool, which has been an indispensable part of school swimming lessons, club work and leisure activities in the region for over 50 years, is in its final stages,” said the Main-Kinzig district in a press release.

Reopening of swimming pool: construction management from Fulda on schedule

The Main-Kinzig district carried out the renovation through its own youth and leisure facilities with a budget of around 1.4 million euros. The aim was to modernize the bathroom technically, energetically and barrier-free. Defective pool parts were replaced, lighting and electrical installations were renewed, and the sanitary facilities and entrances were made barrier-free.

“We assume that we will be able to reopen the hall for swimming at the beginning of April,” explained Reinhold Walz, the operations manager. “The renovation work on our indoor swimming pool is progressing very well overall,” added Walz. “This is a great benefit for our house guests, schools, clubs and families. Learning to swim and regional swimming offers are central components of the sports and leisure culture in the Main-Kinzig district.”

The first district councilor Andreas Hofmann underlined the importance of the modernization: “With the modernization we are securing an important meeting point for sport, health and social interaction. The indoor swimming pool is much more than just a swimming pool – it is a place for learning, togetherness and health.”

Despite the challenges that many indoor swimming pools in Germany currently have to overcome, the youth center shows what a successful renovation can look like. “We stayed pretty much on schedule. Thanks to good pre-planning, all the work was carried out without any major unpleasant surprises, which is by no means a given when carrying out such a fundamental and in-depth renovation of a building from the early 1970s.”

Weber + Elsässer Architects from Fulda are in charge of construction management

Gösta Weber from Weber + Elsässer Architekten Fuldawho were entrusted with planning and construction management, also expressed themselves positively: “We are pleased to be able to support the renovation of such an important facility for the Ronneburg youth center and regional school and swimming sports.”

“The work was demanding and varied, with the focus in particular on the complete renewal of all surfaces, the technical equipment and accessibility. The reopening will give the indoor swimming pool a modern character without losing its historical identity.”

The local DLRG, represented by its chairman Ulf Katzwinkl, is looking forward to the reopening: “For our local group, the reopening of the indoor swimming pool not only means better training conditions, but also long-term safety for our swimming and rescue training. Swimming is a cultural technique, a fundamental skill that can be life-saving. We are looking forward to being able to be in the youth center regularly with groups, courses and training times in the future.”

The importance of the project was already highlighted when the state of Hesse's funding decision was handed over by the sports representative and Olympic champion Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff in 2025. 428,000 euros from the SWIMplus program will go towards the renovation and support the goal of teaching children and young people to swim at an early age.
