Two years ago, the DRK local association Schlitz opened the meeting café in the B-Haus. What began as an attempt to get people talking to each other met with great interest – especially among older people.

Schlitz – Supported by a support team from the AWO local association and two helpers from the VdK, predominantly older citizens meet there once a week on Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to drink coffee together. Sweet and savory dishes are on the coffee table. The offer is very varied and free of charge. The organizing team would be happy to receive a donation to cover the costs.

Place to linger: Meeting café in Schlitz celebrates its second birthday

The café has developed into a lively meeting place, says AWO local association chairman Karl Happel, who, together with Thomas Müller, has management responsibility for the German Red Cross in the B-Haus. It remained that way after the dissolution of the DRK local association Schlitz and the merger with the DRK local association Lauterbach last year.

New to the team is Yvonne Schäfer, the educational director of social work at the DRK Lauterbach district association, who then took over the dedicated B-Haus teamsso that they can continue to exist. With your support, those responsible at the B-Haus intend to further develop the content concept of the meeting café.

“Full-time and voluntary work – hand in hand – that is a good basis for adapting the offers in the B-Haus to meet needs, says Happel confidently. “We are taking a new path in Schlitz. AWO, DRK and VdK have joined forces to take the needs of the people in Schlitz into account. Through our joint actions, we want to make a contribution to strengthening the community and social cohesion in Schlitz.”

Problems are also discussed in the meeting café

In the meeting café there is not only a lot of talking and laughing, but also one or two problems are addressed and solutions are sought. Many questions primarily concern social security and care assistance. The AWO support team provides contact with advice centers, institutions and clubs, helps fill out forms or lends a hand in a very pragmatic manner when support is required.

The VdK offers its own consultation hours in the B-Haus to advise and provide assistance on social law issues. AWO and VdK organize joint information events on social issues. And visitors to the meeting café can also take part in the AWO’s leisure activities.
