Trust in difficult times: Fulda Auxiliary Bishop Karlheinz Diez spoke about the Holy Spirit in the cathedral on Whit Monday. His words should provide support and orientation.

Fulda – On Whit Monday (May 25th), Fulda's auxiliary bishop and cathedral dean Prof. Dr. Karlheinz Diez invited the believers in Fulda Cathedral to entrust themselves to the work of the Holy Spirit. This was done in an urgent appeal for trust, truthfulness and mutual support, as can be seen from an advance press release from the diocese of Fulda.

He emphasized the enduring significance of Pentecost, especially in light of persecution of Christians, war and social uncertainty. The auxiliary bishop recalled that following Jesus was always associated with resistance.

Even the first disciples experienced rejection and persecution. Many Christians around the world still share this experience today. At the same time, he emphasized God's comforting promise not to leave believers alone. With the sending of the Holy Spirit, God gives his support, which supports and encourages people in difficult life situations.

“When someone says, 'I'm going with you, you're not alone,' that's healing,” the auxiliary bishop explained. Where people are there for each other in everyday life, show concern and take responsibility, the work of the Holy Spirit becomes visible. Another focus of his sermon was the importance of truth.

The Holy Spirit is not only comforter and advisor, but also “Spirit of truth”. In view of the social uncertainty and the difficulty of distinguishing truth from false information, the auxiliary bishop called for a conscious commitment to truthfulness.

Truth creates clarity, orientation and trust for successful human interaction. The auxiliary bishop described Pentecost as a “festival of understanding”. The Holy Spirit connects people across borders and enables new understanding. He recalled St. Pope John XXIII, for whom Pentecost was the favorite festival.

It is connected with the hope for a spiritual renewal of the church. With the final call “Ambulate in Spiritu Sancto – Walk in the Holy Spirit!” The auxiliary bishop gave those attending the service a spiritual impulse.

The Youth Cathedral Choir under the direction of cathedral music director Franz-Peter Huber provided the music for the Pentecost service. Cathedral organist Max Deisenroth played the organ. The day before, on Pentecost Sunday, Fulda Bishop Michael Gerber spoke about the church as a resonance space.
