After weeks of drought and the first heat in May, the weather in Germany changes fundamentally in the first week of June.
Offenbach/Fulda – Atlantic low pressure areas repeatedly bring showers, thunderstorms and fresh wind to Germany. As meteorologist Robert Hausen from the weather forecast center of the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach explains, after Tief Mechthild, Tief Nesrin now has the center near Scotland Weather-Directed. Warm, humid air masses are temporarily approaching from the south, but they are quickly displaced by a cold front from the west – “that will not leave us unscathed”.

According to the DWD, the first showers and thunderstorms have been affecting western Germany since this morning. In the afternoon and evening they become stronger and spread to the south and the center of the country. Although it is not a “high-end severe thunderstorm situation”, Hausen is expecting stronger developments on a small scale, including heavy rain, hail and squalls. Also in Hesse Showers and sometimes strong thunderstorms arrive from the west, which can bring heavy rain. “Locally severe weather possible,” says the DWD forecast. In the evening the rain will slowly reach the northeast. The maximum temperatures in Hesse are between 21 and 26 degrees.
Weather service warns of thunderstorms in Hesse
For the Fulda district Main-Kinzig districtthe Hersfeld-Rotenburg district and the Vogelsberg The DWD had already issued official warnings of strong thunderstorms at midday. They were initially valid until 3 p.m. and were later extended to 4:30 p.m. Possible hazards: lightning strikes, falling trees, falling objects, road flooding, aquaplaning and hailstorms.
On Wednesday (June 3rd), according to the DWD, the rains associated with Nesrin are only slowly moving away from Western Pomerania to the northeast. A few showers or short thunderstorms will form later in the day. The next Atlantic low then becomes noticeable: Low Peggy moves to almost the same position not far from the Scottish North Sea coast as Nesrin and also carries moist air masses from the Atlantic via the Bay of Biscay and France to Germany.
Changeable weather on Corpus Christi
The German Weather Service is predicting widespread windy weather for Corpus Christi (June 4th). In Hesse there are repeated showers and thunderstorms throughout the day – sometimes with heavy rain, squalls and hail. Storm gusts must be expected, particularly in western Germany, in the mountains and in areas close to thunderstorms. The temperatures on the holiday are mostly around or slightly above 20 degrees. That means: It's getting cooler overall.
According to meteorologist Hausen, this changeable weather with repeated showers of rain and local thunderstorms will continue until the weekend. Nature in particular benefits from the more abundant rainfall: from Upper Swabia to Lower Bavaria, but also in some regions in the southwest, east and north of Germany, plants have recently suffered from considerable drought stress. “Nature is happy,” emphasizes the meteorologist.
