In the summer, Deutsche Bahn is comprehensively renovating the 54 kilometer long railway line between Fulda and Bebra; Regional trains will be replaced by buses and long-distance traffic will be rerouted.
Region – DB InfraGo says that during this period from Friday, June 26th (1 p.m.) to Friday, July 10th (5 a.m.), around 7,200 meters of rails, several switches and around 120 sleepers will be replaced and the track ballast will be replaced over eight kilometers. In addition, so-called tamping work and maintenance work on the overhead line is planned; Large machines such as a ballast cleaning machine and various tamping machines are used for the program with more than 130 individual measures on both tracks, according to a press release.
Railway blocks important route between Fulda and Bebra
“The work is necessary so that the busy section of the route can continue to be operated reliably,” the railway said. The route will be closed to train traffic for the duration of the construction work; long-distance trains will be routed via alternative routes.
In regional transport, DB InfraGo is setting up a rail replacement service with buses between Fulda and Bebra. Since the buses operate in normal traffic and travel slower than the trains, passengers should allow more travel time, according to Deutsche Bahn; In addition, it is not possible to take bicycles on the buses. The exact concept of the rail replacement service is currently still being developed; the corresponding travel times will be gradually incorporated into the digital information media.
The construction work also affects road traffic. From Friday, June 26th (10 a.m.) to Friday, July 10th (6 a.m.), the level crossings Breitzbacher Weg (Hünfeld), L 3471 (Haunetal), Oberhaun (Hauneck) and Johannesberg (Hauneck) will be closed. The Am Mittelrück level crossing in Ludwigsau is not passable from Tuesday, June 30th (12 p.m.) to Friday, July 3rd (2 p.m.), the Ludwigsaumühle level crossing in Ludwigsau from Tuesday, June 30th (6 a.m.) to Thursday, July 2nd (2 p.m.). According to the DB, the responsible road construction authorities are using the closure period to carry out structural tests on road bridges, which are only possible with the overhead lines switched off.
Replacement rail transport will be set up – work will continue in 2027
According to the railway, construction sites and interim storage areas for the required materials are already being set up on site. From Friday, June 26th, the experts will be working in several shifts to implement the construction program. Diversions are planned for long-distance and freight transport. ICE trains on the Frankfurt–Erfurt–Berlin/Dresden route will be rerouted between Frankfurt and Erfurt; the stops in Fulda, Bad Hersfeld, Eisenach and Gotha are no longer available. DB InfraGo emphasizes that it is doing everything it can to keep the disruption and noise pollution caused by the construction work as low as possible and asks for your understanding for the restrictions.
Because the route between Fulda and Bebra is one of the busiest routes in Germany, the railway is planning further extensive maintenance work. From Friday, February 5th to Monday, May 24th, tracks and switches on the section are to be renewed again in 2027. (han)
Around Easter there was also a two-week closure on the Fulda-Hanau railway line.
