Against Amazon! Negotiation of Germany's largest class action lawsuit begins on May 19, 2026

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 10 a.m., the oral hearing of what is currently Germany's largest class action lawsuit will begin at the Munich Higher Regional Court, as the Saxony Consumer Center reports on its online portal. The consumer advocates are campaigning for what they see as the unlawful introduction of advertising in “Prime Video” streaming subscriptions. Together with 220,000 affected consumers, they are demanding justice – and above all: the money back!

The chances for consumers are not bad: the Munich regional court had already ruled in favor of consumer advocates in a lower instance last year, as the AFP news agency reports.

Claim for damages: Who can join the class action lawsuit against Amazon?

All customers who had an “Amazon Prime” subscription before February 5, 2024 that ran at least until February 6, 2024 are entitled to possible compensation. That is the basic requirement. The class action lawsuit affects both the customers who took out the additional subscription for ad-free streaming and the users who stuck with the cheaper option but accepted advertising in return.

The Saxony consumer advice center is demanding a refund of the additional contributions for customers with an ad-free subscription, and compensation for customers without the additional subscription – namely “the value of the additional subscription for ad-free streaming”.

This means compensation of 2.99 euros per month. Based on the start of the proceedings in 2024, prosecutors can currently expect a sum of money of around 80 euros, according to the consumer advice center.

Demand your money back! This is how you take part in the class action lawsuit

To join the class action lawsuit and If you are successful in getting back the money you overpaid, you must register yourself in the lawsuit register. This is done online using the form from the Federal Office of Justice (BfJ). Filling out this form only takes 10 minutes and is free. The Saxony Consumer Center emphasizes: “Co-plaintiffs will never incur any costs in connection with the lawsuit.”

According to the consumer advice center, the registration form must be filled out as follows:

1. Registration: Select “Consumer” here.

2. Personal information: Be sure to enter the full name of the person who also has the “Prime Video” subscription. You do not have to enter anything in the “Company management information” field.

3. Address: Write down your correct and complete address.

4. Representation: This field is only relevant for minors. Anyone under 18 years of age must state their parents including their address under “other authorized representatives”.

5. Information about the representative action: The field should be pre-filled.

6. Subject and reason for the asserted claim or legal relationship: The consumer advice center has made a clear recommendation for this free text field. Plaintiffs are advised to enter the following lines: “I have an Amazon Prime subscription that was taken out before February 5, 2024 and continued beyond that date. To register I used the email address (…). I accepted (if applicable: not) Amazon's offer to watch it ad-free for 2.99 euros. I consider Amazon's changes to the terms and conditions to be unlawful and demand that all amounts collected inappropriately be paid out.“

7. Information about the amount of the claim: Since this amount has not yet been determined and will be decided by the court, you are not allowed to specify anything here.

Once you have submitted the form, you can expect a registration confirmation by post, according to the consumer advice center. Anyone who changes their mind has the option of withdrawing their registration via the Federal Office of Justice.

Join a class action lawsuit! Until when is it possible?

Although the oral hearing of the class action lawsuit begins on May 19, 2026, the lawsuit register does not close until three weeks later. This means you can still register until June 9, 2026 and thus secure any claims for damages against Amazon.
