Tears, arguments and scandals!
On May 19, 2018, millions watched the royal dream wedding of Harry and Meghan at Windsor Castle. But there was apparently chaos behind the scenes: a fight over a tiara, tears over the flower girl dresses and the scandal surrounding Meghan's father made headlines.
Wedding was “nothing but drama”
When the British Prince Harry (41) and the US actress Meghan Markle (44) celebrated their wedding at Windsor Castle in 2018, everything was probably not as magical as it seemed. Millions of people around the world watched the royal wedding on TV eight years ago on May 19th. What they didn't get to see was the drama that was supposedly going on behind the scenes. Tensions with the other members of the royal family are said to have become clear in the run-up to the wedding. Only two years after they said yes, there was a public break. Harry and Meghan left Great Britain and moved to the USA.

Palace insiders reported that the mood leading up to the wedding in 2018 was quite tense and stressful. Author Tina Brown, 72, described the situation as “a mess” in her book “The Palace Papers” and quoted a source as saying it was “nothing but drama the whole time.” Employees were “sick” of Harry and Meghan’s constant demands.
Tiara dispute with the Queen
Royal family expert Tom Bower (79) also claims that Meghan was “too demanding”. This is said to have led to a dispute over the wedding tiara with Angela Kelly (68), the personal fashion advisor to the late Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022). In his biography “Revenge” he writes that Meghan wanted a headdress with emeralds. Harry supported his bride, but Kelly advised against it due to the Russian origin of the gemstones.

In the end, the Queen reportedly had to “clearly put an angry Harry in his place.” He was told that “Meghan can’t have everything she wants. She gets the tiara that I give her,” the queen is said to have explained, according to “The Times”. In the end, Meghan chose the “Queen Mary's Diamond Bandeau”.

Clothes dispute with Princess Kate
Another drama unfolded over the flower girls' dresses. According to Bower, Harry's sister-in-law Princess Kate (44) thought they should follow royal tradition and wear tights underneath. However, Meghan apparently insisted on handling it differently. There was also a discussion about the length of Princess Charlotte's (11) skirt. Kate thought this was too short for her three-year-old daughter. Meghan's assistant Melissa Toubati and designer Clare Waight Keller said they “witnessed Meghan firmly reject Kate's objection,” Bower said. Kate then burst into tears. Meghan has been called a “diva and bridezilla” in the press.

The Duchess of Sussex explained her point of view in her TV interview with Oprah Winfrey (72) in 2021. She claimed that she cried during the incident, not Kate. “A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something – yes, the issue was true – that had to do with the flower girls' dresses, and it made me cry and really hurt my feelings,” Meghan told Oprah. “What was hard to cope with was being blamed for something that not only had I not done, but that had happened to me.”
Have Harry and Meghan been married before?
In the interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan also claimed that she had already secretly married Harry three days before their big wedding in Windsor. “Nobody knows this, but we called the archbishop and just said, 'Listen, this thing, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our connection to be only between us.'”
Meghan then revealed that they held the private ceremony in the garden of Nottingham Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace. However, official documents and the then Archbishop Justin Welby (70) himself contradicted this claim. According to the BBC, the pre-wedding ceremony was simply a matter of “personal vows exchanged in private.”
Meghan's father causes a scandal
Before Harry and Meghan's wedding, the bride's father caused the biggest scandal. The royal family had announced that Meghan's father, Thomas Markle (81), would walk his daughter down the aisle. However, two days before the wedding, Meghan released a statement saying: “Unfortunately my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he is given the space he needs to focus on his health.”

The Mail on Sunday newspaper previously revealed that Markle, who was living in Mexico at the time, had helped stage paparazzi photos of herself preparing for the wedding. Shortly before the wedding, Thomas Markle told the US celebrity website “TMZ” that he had suffered a heart attack. Meghan allegedly only found out about her father's admission to the hospital through this report. Prince Harry's father, now King Charles (77), finally led Meghan to the altar. She is said to have broken off contact with her father.
