Hand on heart: When did you really consciously experience your last meal?
For many people today, eating just happens casually – between meetings, in front of the laptop or with a cell phone in hand. According to food designer Marije Vogelzang, this is exactly what is a real problem.

The taste of food changes with the environment

In an interview with spot on news, the expert explains: Taste doesn't just come from the mouth. It’s “like a story,” she says. Memories, expectations – even colors play a role. Means: What we see and feel has a massive influence on how something tastes.

Sounds crazy, but it's scientifically proven: “The brain tastes good in the mouth.” Vogelzang goes even further: the weight of a spoon or the noises in the room can determine whether we like a dish or not. Your conclusion: “You can serve the same dish twice and just change the context and most people would say it tastes different.” So taste is not a fixed value – but an interplay of environment and feeling.

If you eat at the same time, you miss both!

The real problem lies in everyday life. Many people eat on autopilot – without actually being there. For Vogelzang, it's “like watching a film and reading the subtitles of another film at the same time – you miss both.” There is a loss of awareness of “what you eat, how much, how it feels and where it comes from”.

The good news: There is no need for complicated diets or expensive ingredients. Small changes are often enough.

These tricks will make your food taste better

A simple trick: Try eating with the “wrong” hand. It sounds banal, but it forces the brain to pay attention again. Or imagine yourself in a different role – for example, a restaurant critic. That also changes perception.

Even optical tricks Help: A full-looking plate can increase the feeling of eating more – even if the portion is smaller.

And: If you want to eat more consciously again, you should compare. Trying two types of apples next to each other or two different types of bread – this “sharpenes your perception”. And the perfect meal? For Vogelzang it is very simple: Nobody looks at their smartphone. Everyone is in the moment. And that's exactly what makes the difference. (with spot on/vho)
