Every night we leave sweat and dander on the mattress – a paradise for millions of mites. This can be prevented with the right care: These four steps ensure hygienic sleep without expensive effort.

The mattress is more than just a piece of furniture: we spend hours on it every night, leaving behind sweat, saliva and millions of dead skin cells. Whether you find this romantic or rather unsavory, one thing is certain: this object needs regular cleaning. However, since you can't simply put a mattress in the washing machine like a dirty shirt, caring for it requires a bit of sensitivity and specialist knowledge.

Why cleaning is so important

A dirty mattress does not normally pose an immediate threat to life. The actual problem arises from the gradual accumulation of dirt, which promotes mold formation, can trigger allergies and shortens the lifespan of the material. Experts recommend doing a thorough cleaning every six months.
The main reason for pollution is the human body. Fluids and skin cells are continuously secreted during sleep. Night sweats can result in up to a liter of fluid entering the bed per night. This moisture penetrates the mattress and creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and up to ten million house dust mites. Their excretions are particularly problematic because the proteins they contain can cause allergic asthma and chronic nasal problems.

Step 1: Clean the foundation

First, the bed should be completely removed. Sheets, pillowcases and mattress protectors should be washed at a minimum of 40°C, ideally 60°C if the care labels allow this. During the washing process, it is a good idea to let the bare mattress air out thoroughly with the window open so that any accumulated moisture can escape.
The next step is to vacuum the surface to remove dust and dander. Particular attention should be paid to the seams and edges, as this is where residue tends to collect. For mattresses with natural fillings such as wool, you should avoid using a vacuum cleaner. The high suction power can displace the delicate fibers and cause lumps to form. In this case, a soft brush is a better choice.

Step 2: Neutralize odors

A proven remedy for unpleasant odors is baking soda. Sprinkle the powder generously onto the surface and leave it on for a few hours or overnight. It absorbs moisture and neutralizes odors before being vacuumed or brushed off. For stubborn smell, a mixture of diluted white vinegar or a special enzyme spray that effectively breaks down proteins from sweat and body oils can help.

Step 3: Target stains

Moisture inside the mattress is the biggest enemy as it encourages mold growth. Liquids should therefore be dabbed off immediately with a dry sponge. For superficial stains, a mild cleaning solution made from one part liquid detergent and four parts water is suitable. The stain is carefully treated from the outside to the inside without soaking the material.

Particular caution is required with memory foam. This is extremely porous and must not get wet as trapped water can permanently damage the structure. A handy tip for foam mattresses is to use regular shaving cream. This contains significantly less liquid than other cleaners, can be applied selectively and removed carefully with a damp cloth after around 15 minutes.

Step 4: Allow to dry properly

Before the bed is made up again, the mattress must be completely dry. Residual moisture inevitably leads to musty smells or mold formation under the sheet. Ideally, the mattress should dry upright in a sunny, well-ventilated place. The UV light from the sun also has a natural effect against mites and bacteria. Ideally, up to 48 hours should be planned for this process.

Prevention is the best protection

To keep cleaning effort to a minimum, we recommend a high-quality mattress protector that acts as a physical barrier. It is also helpful not to make the bed straight away in the morning, but to throw back the covers. This allows heat and moisture to escape, which significantly worsens the habitat for mites. Sleepwear also plays a role: natural fibers such as cotton or bamboo regulate the temperature better than synthetics and therefore keep the mattress dry and fresh for longer.
