After a joke on the “heute-show” about Howard Carpendale fans, Oliver Welke finds himself exposed to harsh criticism. The pop singer himself even gave the satirist an ultimatum. Now Welke admits a misstep and promises improvement.

The satirist Oliver Welke responded again to criticism of his joke about fans of the pop singer Howard Carpendale on the “heute-show”. After speaking about US President Donald Trump's demand to dismiss Trump-critical late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, Welke added on the ZDF satirical show: “Gags about Trump – almost as dangerous as messing with Howard Carpendale fans.” Then he added: “Very decent people, by the way, who actually smell wonderful. Peace.”

In the broadcast on April 24th, Welke said: “A hundred legs, everything stinks of urine. What is that? The front row at Carpendale.” There was a hail of criticism, including from the 80-year-old pop singer himself.

As the program continued on Friday evening, Welke explained: “Yes, it was a very stupid, unnecessary old joke.” And he promises: “I won’t insult any singers anymore.” Previously, a satirical article about a fictional betting shop asked which popular singer Welke would next insult “with a tasteless joke.”

Howard Carpendale was disappointed with Welke after the broadcast on April 24th. “I never thought you had these tendencies to turn on people who can’t defend themselves,” the singer said in a video on Instagram, among other things. Welke has probably never been to one of his performances. There are “fine people” at his concerts. He also gave Welke an ultimatum. Until he apologizes, “there is nothing to discuss between the two of us.”

Welke then commented on Carpendale's statement in the “Bild” newspaper: “Our topic in the show was AI, and in one excerpt a care robot tells a bad joke. Then I tried to add an even worse one – and it worked. For that we needed a pop singer that everyone knows. By the way, I've actually never been to a Howard Carpendale concert. But I bet that there are pleasant-smelling people of all ages sitting there.”
