Curly hair, sweet smile and a distinctive nose!
As Frances “Baby” Houseman, she danced her way into the hearts of an entire generation – but after that, Jennifer Gray (66) became surprisingly quiet. What happened to the “Dirty Dancing” star? Between cosmetic surgeries, tragedies and a late career comeback lies a life story that a script couldn't have written better. Today the actress is hardly recognizable anymore.
“Dirty Dancing” made Jennifer Gray world famous
At just 27 years old, Jennifer Gray became world famous overnight: In “Dirty Dancing” in 1987 she played the shy “Baby” alongside Patrick Swayze (†2009). The film became a surprise hit and grossed more than $214 million – a gigantic success for a low-budget production.
Jennifer even received a Golden Globe nomination – Hollywood was at her feet. But the expected super stardom didn't materialize. Instead of major film roles, smaller projects and TV productions followed. The reason: She went under the knife after her breakthrough – and in doing so, she probably ruined her own career.

Hollywood had lost its “baby.”
In the early 1990s, Jennifer had her nose operated on twice – hoping for more roles, as she once told People magazine. The result? For many fans she was suddenly unrecognizable. Even friends had to look twice – and she herself said later, she “went into the operating room as a celebrity and came out anonymously.”
In interviews and her memoir “Out of the Corner,” Jennifer called the procedure a big mistake and spoke of having “lost his identity and career” as a result.

But Jennifer never completely disappeared. She starred in series, appeared on stage on Broadway and even had her own sitcom in 1999. A spectacular comeback followed in 2010: She won the US show “Dancing With the Stars” – with dancing, of all things! A circle closed.

The tragic accident – a shadow over the mega success
Even before “Dirty Dancing,” Jennifer had starred in hits like “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” and was considered a promising newcomer. But just a few weeks before the premiere, something happened in August 1987 that would change her life forever: During a vacation in Ireland she had a serious accident with her boyfriend at the time, Matthew Broderick (64).. The head-on collision caused by Matthew killed two women in the other car. Matthew suffered a broken leg and ribs as well as facial injuries. Jennifer suffered severe whiplash and was in shock.

The experience left the actress deeply traumatized. Although she survived the accident largely physically unscathed, the psychological consequences and chronic pain caused by the whiplash burdened her for a long time. Jennifer suffered from feelings of guilt and initially withdrew from the spotlight. She was therefore hardly able to enjoy the gigantic success of “Dirty Dancing”. A first emotional turning point – long before Hollywood forgot about it.

Jennifer Grey's eventful personal life
Jennifer also repeatedly made headlines in her private life. She was in a relationship with Johnny Depp (62), among others. The two got together in 1989, a few months after her split from Matthew Broderick. “We were young. For me, this guy was the answer to my problems”Jennifer once told Entertainment Tonight about the relationship. “This guy was sweet and loving and romantic and crazy about me and beautiful.” It was “necessary,” she explained about this time in her life. “I was bleeding inside and this guy saved me and just made me not feel what I was feeling.”

Jennifer is also said to have romances with Michael J. Fox (64), William Baldwin (63) and George Stephanopoulos (65). She found great happiness in love with the actor Clark Gregg (64), whom she married in July 2001. Their daughter Stella was born in the same year. After almost 20 years of marriage, the divorce followed in 2021 – another turning point in the star's life.

“Baby” returns to the screen
Almost 40 years after the cult film, a dream of many fans has come true: An official sequel to “Dirty Dancing” is in the works – and Jennifer Gray will be playing “Baby” again. Production is scheduled to start in 2026, with a theatrical release planned for 2027 or 2028. An emotional moment for an actress whose career remains so closely tied to this role.
But Jennifer is more than just “baby” today. Her story is pure Hollywood: fame, tragedy, plastic surgery drama, love stories – and in the end a comeback.
