“That outrages me!”
In the dispute over secretly filmed recordings from a slaughterhouse, prominent support has come forward: actor Sky du Mont sides with animal rights activists in the appeal process before the Higher Regional Court – and finds clear words.
“That’s a no-go for me”
A dispute over secretly recorded videos from a slaughterhouse in Lower Saxony that were secretly recorded and published in 2024 is currently being renegotiated before the Oldenburg Higher Regional Court. The recordings showed the CO₂ stunning of pigs and had already triggered a ruling by the Oldenburg regional court in 2025, which, among other things, imposed damages on the animal rights activists and a ban on further distribution.

Since the activists have filed an appeal, the case is now back before the Oldenburg Higher Regional Court. On the day of the trial, numerous supporters gathered in front of the court to support the animal rights activists. Actor Sky du Mont was also there and clearly criticized the legal assessment: “For me, this is a no-go against my sense of justice. And that outrages me,” he says in the interview.

Tears after shocking images
The trigger for his commitment was the recordings from a slaughterhouse. These show the CO₂ stunning of pigs – a process that is widespread in Germany. “I watched this video and was horrified. Tears streamed down my eyes,” says the actor.
The activists secretly took the pictures and published them. A slaughterhouse operator is taking legal action against this. Sky du Mont shows solidarity: “I think this is very, very brave and justified. Such images must be made public.”

Criticism of a lack of awareness
The actor sees a fundamental problem: many people don't even know under what conditions meat is produced. “People need to know where the schnitzel comes from,” he says. Even when it comes to milk production, there is often a lack of awareness of the reality behind the products.

For him, it's essentially about transparency: “Why aren't we allowed to show grievances? That can't be the case.” He is particularly critical of the use of CO₂ to anesthetize animals. It is known that they could suffer, but the practice will continue.
Fundamental question in court
Parallel to the trial, a far-reaching decision could be imminent: an animal protection association is fundamentally suing against the CO₂ stunning of pigs. If the court judges the method to be inadmissible, it would have consequences for slaughterhouses far beyond the specific case.

This was the first verdict
In July 2025, the Oldenburg regional court ruled in favor of the company in the proceedings between the slaughterhouse operator from Lohne and animal rights activists. The activists were essentially sentenced to pay damages because they entered the area without authorization and secretly took photos of the CO₂ stunning of pigs. The court also banned the further distribution of the videos and imposed a ban on entry and payment of the legal costs.
The animal rights activists appealed. At the same time, the claim for damages of around 98,000 euros remains a point of contention, which the operator actually wanted to drop as part of a settlement.
